Just got this in from Blackstone. I intended to change at 5000 but had 3 straight weekends get filled up with other commitments. This is my 2nd oil analysis on this car (doing them once per year). The only thing that bugs me is the lead. All wear metals dropped per 1000 miles, but lead nearly tripled! Yet everything else is just about perfect...silicon is nicely dropped, flashpoint and fuel% are great, etc. Blackstone thinks it's an anomaly, that perhaps a particle streak went through the bearings and caused this. Does that sound feasible? The most current results are on the right. BTW, both of these analyses are with SL Pennzoil 5W/20.

Where'd all the calcium go?

TBN was reported at 1.9, so it looks like I'm at the oil's limit at 6000 mi. The previous sample had a TBN of 3.3 with 5100 mi.

Driving style has remained consistent between the two samples...90% highway miles with a weekly commute of 300 miles (roughly 30 miles to and from work each day).

Filter in the first analysis at 10K miles was a PureOne 14459. The most recent was a Premium Plus 24458.

As always, all comments appreciated.

What part of the engine is pure lead? I thought the bearings were a mixture of lead, copper or possibly aluminum.

That lead number kind of fouled up an excellent oil report.

Thanks for the replies so far. I've got the last of my SL Pennzoil 5W20 in there now with another Premium Plus 24458. I'll change it out at 30k miles and resample. After that I've got 2 cases of SM Penn 5W20 bought at 1.39/qt during Pep Boys grand reopening.

I wonder if another UOA will show zero Potassium and Sodium. Hopefully the trace amounts of those are insignificant and don't mean there's any coolant getting into the oil, albeit even in tiny amounts.

This analysis shows much more depletion of the calcium based detergent, ie a level of only 1900 ppm ,vs 2850 ppm the last time around. In addition, the boron levels are also 50% lower than before and ZDDP is also lower. Taken in total, these "markers" indicate this lubricant chemistry is severely depleted.

I'd drop back to 4500-5000 miles to give yourself some safety margin and you'll see the Pb levels return to normal.

Note: The TBN level is not always the limiting factor in lubricant life and the test isn't as accurate when the TBN drops < 3.0....

TS, the VOA of this oil in SM shows calcium at 1599 and boron at 59. Could this actually be SM and not SL?

farrarfan1,

No, this was definitely SL. I bought the oil before SM was available. I used the last of my SL in the latest oil change and have a couple of cases of SM that haven't been touched yet.

Thanks for the feedback, TooSlick. I think you're right. We'll see for sure on the next oil change.

Tim

What was the date on the bottles, if you remember back that far? Pennzoil bottled their 20 & 30wt SM formula in SL-labelled bottles for months prior to the SM bottles appeared on the shelf.

Its not unusual for the bottles to be labeled one specification and containing another oil. Seen it here before on at least on one other brand.
