Today at work we got an urgent email to pull all Pennzoil 10-40 quarts from the shelves immediately. The only info we were given was it is "defective" and replacement oil will be shipped to us. No batch numbers were given, just the sku number.

I wonder what the deal is with it. I just put about 5 cases of it out today at the parts store I work at. Well, I was working at, tonight was my last day there because I found a better job maybe.

Well I'd prefer not to type the name of the store, but let's say you can get GC there also. That enough of a hint for you
All I know is all 10-40 in quart bottles was affected by this recall. We have stock from 4-6 months ago and it was all pulled and picked up today. I know this first hand, I'm the manager and do frieght on sundays.
This is interesting. I bought a couple of quarts of 10w-40 for my manual transmission a few months ago that I have yet to pour in. I wonder what the deal is?

You may recall some years back that a competitor was spreading rumors that Corona beer had urine in it (link below). Lacking any other information, I've come to the only logical conclusion regarding this oil recall: the tainted Pennzoil has urine in it.

I did some checking in to this and not to worry. It only has to do with Autozone only, and it only has to do with one pallet of oil. They cannot locate the particular pallet so they are asking their stores to pull the 10W40 until they figure it out. It is something very simple and no cause for alarm. Sorry I cannot say what it is, but Autozone management and Pennzoil management asked to keep it quite. That's why they just asked the stores to pull the SKU numbers. Hope this helps in some small way.

If it has 'got to be kept quiet', than obviously it is more than just a minor mistake. I remember when 3-mile island was just a 'minor mistake'.....
Personally I will not worry about a Pennzoil 10W-40 recall. As far as I have been able to determine the vast majority of newer cars, trucks, SUVs and Vans with gasoline engines require 5W-20, 5W-30, or 10W-30 motor oil. I would not use a 10W-40 motor oil anyway (it is not allowed in the owner's manual). The only viscosities of oil allowed in my car are 0W-30 (in extreme cold), 5W-30 (preferred), and 10W-30 (in warmer temperatures).
Nice thing about Pennzoil is that it is available everywhere at least in the USA. It also has a nice low cold point so maybe conventional Pennzoil could be used in the wintertime and you might not need a synthetic. And Pennzoil (along with Castrol and Chevron) is one of the highest rated oils according to VOAs and UOAs at this web site.

For the first time, I got some Pennzoil 10w30 for $0.47 a quart AR/AC/AGC
