Out of curiosity, what are the foot pedal locations on a car with a right hand steering wheel?

Is the gas pedal on the "inside" towards the middle of the car? If so, I would assume that you gas, and brake with the left foot? That would seem so awkward.

Pedals are always in the same order, right to left. Gas always for the right foot.

What varies is the turn signal arrangement. In England the turn signal levers are just like the US, operated with the left hand. In Ireland, Japan, and who knows where else, the are on the right, operated with the right hand.

Clutch and e-brake (if foot actuated) on the left. Brake in middle, accelerator on right.

Makes mechanical clutch linkages really easy back in the day. E30 has a pushrod from right to left to actuate the left handed master cylinder for the brakes, making the brakes feel funny.

Most cars here, Japan, and a lot of UK ones that we've got have indicators on right hand side. Imports like Beemers, Astras, some Hyundais etc. have them on the left.

I like the handbrake and gearstick being operated by my non dominant hand.

BTW, one of the formerly US Pacific Islands converted to driving on the left just recently so that they could buy low mileage second hand Japanese cars.

A high percentage of the cars here were original japanese RHD. They have to be converted in customs before coming out. Although not the turn signals.... Just steering, pedals and dash. At one time the dash was not required, so a lot of cars had the dash cluster still on the passenger side.

The only vehicles I've seen with a non standard pedal layout are some army trucks from WWII - they had the throttle in the centre. I didn't have any trouble driving them.

English vehicles having a left hand indicator is more because they are engineered in Germany these past few decades....previously they had the indicator stalk on the right. We get Japanese vehicles built in Europe with indicator stalk on the left - strange to see 2 Mitsubishi Pajero's built in the same year with reversed controls. We obviously have no laws saying where controls need to go.

Interesting to read about turn signal stalks.

On cars where the headlight switch is on the dashboard, is it to the left of the steering wheel or too the right? On LHD, it is to the left.

It is the same. So 1st would be up and away on most crash boxes.

Funny you mention that. I don't think I could shift with my non-dominant hand if I had to. There's far more motor skills and tactile feel required to operate a shifter than hold a steering wheel at a position.

Shifting with your non-dominant hand is pretty easy. I got my wife to let me shift while she was driving for a day or so before I went to the UK on business the first time. As everyone else has mentioned, the pedals are in the same order and the shift pattern is unchanged.

The most amusing thing about driving there was a small (30 x 50 cm) sign on the fence as I left the Avis lot at Heathrow. It said, "Please drive on the left" in English, German & French. So polite and understated.

For the first couple days I opened the passenger door initially. That habit was tougher to break than I expected.

We've got a friend who was in a really nasty crash some months ago due to a tourist on the wrong side of the road, and one of our speed camera blackspots became a blackspot due to it being where the tourists turn out of the road to a major attraction and onto the goat-track highway.

There are lots of fatals here from tourists on the wrong side of the road - in tourist areas there are big arrows painted on the road, and rental cars and campers have big signs on the dash.

Would you believe there are drivers who need to memorize whether to push down the turn signal stalk or to pull up it for say left turn! I thought you were going to ask that question too :-)
