PB Blaster to Remove PlastiDip?

Last summer I decided to PlastiDip the wheels on my Focus black. Apparently, I forgot that I do not like black wheels. I did a light coat and liked the gunmetal look it had. I decided to leave it at that.

The PlastiDip held on great - many pressure washes, car washes (by hand - soap, polish, wax) and never came off. I will be putting new tires on and decided I didnt like the black wheels any more.

I COULD NOT get the stuff to peel off. It would just lightly chip off.

I tried waste oil and that just made it sticky. MMO worked,but it was still a bit of picking away.

Out of options, I finally remembered that I have some PB Blaster.

To my surprise, on a rag soaked with PB Blaster, the Plastidip comes right off!

Has anyone else ever not been able to remove stuff?

Also - I managed to get some on the tire and it seemed to have oxidized the tire? Crazy!

Anyway, I will not be using this stuff on anything I don't expect to be permanent


On a side note ... the PB Blaster ate through it's metal container ... $23/gal pb blaster wasted.

Curious if WD40 would have worked as well.

Nice to know that PlastiDip is working out for coloring wheels. How many coats did you put? My neighbor used it on his car to put racing stripes and blacken his wheels. It's been more than a year and it looks like it's holding up well.

I thought of using clear PlastiDip as a bra for the front lower bumper of my cars. I know for sure it will not stop large rocks, but for sure it will minimize damage and absorb impact from smaller sandy particles off the freeway. Did you try the Glossifier?

Write to the PB Blaster company. I will bet they will make it right. I wrote to them a few years ago saying the cans would run out of propellant before the liquid and the can label said you could hold the can at any angle. They responded that the labels had been made up by marketing and were not correct but they had never noticed. I got a free case for bringing it to their attention.

You should be happy the product worked as advertised. If they can keep it in a metal tin or aerosol can, then it's NFG as a penetrating oil!

I believe it would have. I lubed some lug nuts on my Cherokee (set of wheels I don't use unless I'm doing a lot of highway) and the WD40 did take it off too.

The PB Blaster ate the internals of the spray bottle that was included with the gallon jug!

I contacted them about it eating it's own jug.

The best way I have found to remove the Plasti-Dip is to use a Bug & Tar spray at the car wash right before I begin my washing.

Stoner Tarminator is my favorite. I just spray it on any Plasti-Dip that I want gone, got put quarters in the machine, select soapy water, and do whatever else I need to so that the b&t spray has a chance to work on the Plasti-Dip for about a minute to two minutes.

Then I use a little bug scrubber sponge or even a big MF towel to wipe off the Plasti-Dip while I am hosing it down with a strong stream of soapy water from the car wash gun.

All the wax protection in that area will then need to be reapplied, but I do not mind that at all, and even wish I could do it more often instead of the once every few months routine I have now.

I have a stash of bug and tar remover that I bought at a local dollar store. Works great!

I'll have to try some of that.

That's so weird. I have a spray can of it that's over 10 years old and it still fine.
