parking at work

Can you get in trouble for taking someones parking spot at work? We don't have assigned parking but everyone pretty much parks in the same spot everyday. I was thinking of taking one of my co workers spot cause I know it's going to [censored] him off. He was trying to tell me where to park so I figured what the heck, i'll just take his spot. Everyone will probably get a good laugh out of it. I just don't want this to turn into something that I end up getting fired for. I don't think you can, but I figured I'd just check. That's one of my pet peeves is telling me where to park. You don't pay my insurance so why would you tell me where to park. Obviously you don't take your bosses parking spot but a co workers should be fine. Right? I think everyone will get a good laugh out of it.

I broke up a fight over a parking spot once at work. The guy who started it had the entire lot to choose from, but he wanted that particular spot.

He got suspended w/o pay for a week.

Do what you want, but be aware that some people get real territorial. Is it really worth it to get busted teeth or a keyed car to make some kind of inconsequential point?

If there's no assigned parking then it's first come first served. I pretty much park in the same spot every day but once in a while it gets taken and I don't really care. I just make sure to avoid the known car door ding people. We've got a few people that just fling their doors open and have been known to ding other peoples car doors. My advice would be to avoid any kind of confrontation located at work, whether it was in the building or in the parking lot.

Hello, I park as far away from any other car as I can.
I shield my car's front end as much as I can.
I take a corner spot (to protect 2 sides) whenever I can.
I want as little to do with anyone else's "ego machine" as I can.
I want my car to be as invisible or transparent as I can.

I want some stupid man-child to cry about me to HIS select audience or the boss?
I want to decide under stress how to respond to all his like-minded people when they approach me over this?

Sometimes its nice to be nice.. you seem to want to mess with him and it might be fun but what happens when this guy gets even how far will things go? I have a carry permit so i let things go because its better that way but i was in a parking lot 5 yrs ago and i saw this big guy (turned out to be a ny cop) go nuts because some little nit wit took his spot and he actually got out of his truck and punched the guys window and was pulling him out of the car the little guy owned the karate school and beat this guy down to the ground. this cop looked silly he stood No chance against the chinese guy even with his gun. It was really funny i felt sorry for the cop he was thrown around in front of his girl friend like he was 10 pounds and he was about 200. Sometimes people just snap over parking spaces.

No assigned spots = first come, first served. Be prepared for a territorial nut job to lose it though.

I haven't had any issues with parking at work, but I'm not worried about door dings or anything.

One time I did block in "the secretaries" at work as a joke. Parked my truck directly behind their cars so they couldn't leave until after I left, but it was all in good fun.

I think your first mistake was in recognizing the guy's spot as "his." (or hers?)

Should have just parked there if it was convenient and went about your business. If he gets confrontational and you react to it like it was expected all of a sudden YOU are the bad-guy for instigating this. If you could respond in a very honest "I had no idea it meant so much to you" way the other person looks unbelievably foolish to be throwing a temper tantrum over a parking spot.
