Yeah makes you wonder.
Plus for my Toyota, a Fram (canada made) is 15.99 at waldo mart.
OE at the Toyota dealer is 17.99

i have been in a saw blade plant and seen one same product sold as Sears, K mart, miller, porter rockwell etc.
And been in an orange juice plant that made 7 brands (they said the formulas were different?)
Someone knows who makes what they are not telling.

The past week or so, I've been looking at paper air filters, in 2 sizes: one for my mother's 94 Grand Marquis, the other for my 97 Neon. Both are panel-type filters. No Baldwins available locally. What I've found:

Grand Marquis size: the old Wix in the car had white paper, orange gasket. The new Wix I looked at had orange gskt, *brown* paper, could feel no oil on it. Fram looked like always(white paper, gskt overruns on mesh), other brands all looked like each other- black "grainy feeling" gasket, white paper. Didn't really count pleats, but all looked similar, except for the old dirty Wix I removed, which obviously has more pleats. I finally chose & installed the $5 Partsmaster on the Mercury.

Neon size(Fram CA3660/equiv); Fram looked as above. Wix, Purolator, STP, Partsmaster, & at least one other house brand all looked *identical* to each other- same black, "grainy feel" gskt as noted above, white paper, no obvious diff in # of pleats. Wix had 2 diff #'s that fit, both expensive, looked identical. Haven't bought a Neon filter yet, will probably get the STP or Partsmaster. I've seen no AC-Delcos or Motorcrafts on the shelf anywhere in my area. Any thoughts or suggestions?

The recent post of pic on the Jeep Liberty air filter makes me think maybe I should at least look at a Mopar at the dealer, but that'll probably cost ~$10-$15.

I've concluded that most of the air filter brands/sellers get their filters from a small # of sources. Also, that it's almost useless to make blanket assumptions of characteristics based on brand. All comments, disagreements, & even well mannered flames are welcome!

My OE filter in my F150 said fram right on the sealing ring. Orange ring with white paper filter media.

I should clarify my original post on this thread: when I spoke of no obvious differences in the # of pleats between brands, that referred to the Grand Marquis size filter. I never fully pulled the Neon size Fram(CA3660) out of the box, it had been scrunched & damaged.
When I installed the Partsmaster panel-type air filter on my Neon last weekend, I counted pleats- 63. While I didn't actually count pleats on the 2 Wixes, the Purolator, STP, & one other house brand, I did remove all from the boxes, & they all looked identical. I found a non-scrunched Fram for my car in WM yesterday, & counted pleats-81~

! That's 28% more pleats! Yes, I actually bought it

. Moral? Don't assume much based on brand name.

Yes, I'm actually saying something good about Fram air filters! Who'da thought it?

I still don't care for their oil filters, though!

I counted 87 pleats on the Fram air filter I just pulled out of my Firebird, and 79 or 80 on the AC Delco I replaced it with.

I assumed the AC would've had more.

I sure hope I made the right choice by putting an AC air filter back in! I wasn't happy with the silicon results with the Fram in my car, although it works awesome in my wife's Honda!

Yeah, they have been jumping. Not too long ago they were around 8.99-10.00 and now it's hard to find them on sale around 10.99-11.99, where I bought 11 last month on a sale.

An interesting note about Napa/Wix, I just replaced the Fram filter that came in the 1991 Mercedes 300E I just got my wife with a Napa gold. It came in a plain unlabled brown box and is made in Poland, it doesn't resemble any Napa gold filter I've ever seen and is most likely not made by Wix. It appears to be a very good quality filter, and certainly made of better materials than the Fram it replaced.
