Paint job charges

Dropping off my Grand Marquis to get the front and rear bumpers painted at the local Ford dealership. They use BASF/Glasurit's 90 Line for the work, which is a waterborne paint system.

Charges are $250 per bumper, whilst the market average is $140. Most of the "better" shops use PPG/Nexa Autocolor or AkzoNobel/Sikkens but no one uses waterborne paint. Ask them to use something like BASF/Glasurit or Standox/DuPont and expect to pay +25%, but that won't be waterborne either.

I've had it with the so-called "reputable" shops I've tried being crooks and not getting the job right first time. The paint either dulls, cracks or starts to peel off when hit. Dealer did a fantastic job on my Explorer, so I decided to go back.

Just wondering how the pricing compares to different parts of the US at reputable shops - excluding places MAACO.

Hey MAACO uses the best latex house paint available and does not charge extra to paint chrome trim, or windshields or tires or wheels. Whats not to like??

My friend backed into my front bumper and caused a scuff. Bumper needed to be repainted and I needed a new headlamp due to that being scuffed aswell.

His insurance paid my body shop $1400 for the repair.

It's one of the best bodyshops around here and they are a certified Volkswagen/Audi repair facility.

Maaco uses Nason paints if I am not mistaken.Low end Ful Cryl,next step Ful Base,and top line Ful Thane.Depends on how much you want to spend.Still though,econo lines of Dupont paints.

$500 for a decent spray, not including prep work. I've been quoted as high as $700 for spraying a new bumper with Glasurit at a high-end body shop in the Bay Area.

Not a bumper, but I had my roof repainted last summer.(because of some slight rust by the windshield). This is on a 01 Chevy S-10 reg. cab. Cost me $400 and they did a great job. I had it done at Pro Collision.

$400 - $600 is the going rate to repair and repaint minor/moderate bumper damage in my experience. I have to estimate/get quotes on vehicles multiple times a week for work.

Paint job quality and price all depends upon the preparation - the longer they spend on the prep, the better the finished job....and the higher the price.

PPG/Nexa, Spies Hecker/Standox, DuPont and BASF all make good paint. It's just a matter of how well the painter applies it and how well the work is done before the car goes into the booth. Most shops here charge between $80-150/hour here. When my parents had the front bumper on their Prius replaced, it was a $1200 job using an OEM Toyota bumper cover and Nexa Aquabase Plus paint.

When I worked at the stealership, all of our painters were rolling in the dough. Body shops make boatloads of money...
