Now that I own a Pentastar, I have to learn cartridge filters again. They've change a littlle from the ones my 1949 Plymouth used. But actually not as much as you might think.

Anyway, the first thing I learned was that the palette of choices is tiny compared with can filters- only "plain" filters stocked locally: No P1, no M1, no RP, no Fram Ultra. In fact most of those don't even list an application on-line yet, let alone locally. Several stores didn't even have a standard in stock... What's a filter geek to do? :p

This geek ordered a P1, and when it arrived I found myself underwhelmed. Folds are very tightly packed. That is kinda typical for P1, not the biggest concern except the small diameter of the cartridge exacerbates the issue. But are all cartridge-types "E-core" style? that's a much bigger gripe for me. I'd much prefer a perforated steel center tube! Other than that, looks OK. Th newer bluish P1 media instead of the older reddish media. Made in South Korea.

The engines in both of my vehicles take that type of filter. That plastic core holds up very well. I've never had an issue.

Trying to compare standard cartridge filter construction to spin on is like comparing apples and oranges imo.

Ecore 'type' nylon cage centertube is quite common, in fact based on pics posted here I'd say more typical than any other type cartridge construction. Some cartridge filters have no centertube cage at all, and in that case the tube/cage is generally part of the cartridge housing. The key differences between cartridge and ecore spin on are two things. Pleating much tighter than many/most ecores, which is a good thing. And there no combo valve to have to be concerned about. Imo, this P1 cartridge looks quite well made and I'd have zero concern about using it.

As for coo, same as the Napa Gold/Wix in the link below and Hyundai/Kia oem.

Looks good. Nothing wrong with a 'e-core' style center tube if the pleats are tight, even and lots of them. Manufacturers can get away with none-of-the-above in a can because they know we can't see it.

With the pleat spacing that tight, you have nothing to worry about with the E-core center tube. The E-core filters that had media blow-out issues had large pleat spacing which allowed them to bend over flat on the large center core windows due to the force of the oil flow, causing the blow-out.

That's a pretty nice looking filter actually.

Some cartridge oil filters for some engines have no core at all, just a plain pleats of media keep in place by 2 end caps.

Maybe it slips over some kind of center core structure built into the engine ?

So you guys have no concern about the pleats being so tight they practically bind against each other on the center tube? Seems like that starts to cut back the usable surface area at some point. I've always appreciated the fact that P1's pack in a lot of media, but there does seem to be a point of diminishing returns, and it looks to me like maybe this cartridge format has reached it. Of course that MANN cartridge looks about the same, so maybe more oil can flow out of the cracks between pleats than I think.

440Magnum;

I am in the same boat as you with my new Cherokee and the 3.2L Pentastar. New engine for 2014 and an all new filter too( used on 2014+ 3.6L as well - another cartridge style ). Nothing on the high quality/premium end available.

I always use the best filter I can find and it bugs me having to settle for a standard filter. At least you found a P1 which is at least a step up. For 2014 3.2L/3.6L models it is Wix, Purolator Classic, Champ, LuberFiner, and OEM. That's it.

You can get a Purolator Synthetic filter for your 2011 3.6L. Part# is PSL36135. Probably has to be ordered though.

Mobil does one too P990 but I don't think it is the high end Mobil 1 type?

It may look that way with the eyeballs, but highly doubt flow is actually effected from tight pleat packing. Even fluids like oil will find every nook and cranny to flow through. Fact is, there is lots of surface area which helps keep the delta-p down with flow. I'm thinking the filter designer would have the design tested in the lab to ensure it's not 'choking' flow before giving the go-ahead for production.

I always got a kick out of "garage scientists" claiming that PureOnes were flow restrictive because the media was packed to tight. Yet a real bench test with accurate test equipment proved that "theory" completely wrong.

I forgot Fram in that list if you are so inclined.

As far as I can tell, that's only a part number so far. Amazon doesn't have it in stock. Neither do any of the other outlets I checked, although a few do show it as a part number "currently out of stock."

Looks like P1 can't win at the moment. Either too wide by the seam pleat on the spin-on, or this case too tight on this cartridge. With some of the recent tears in spin-on, definitely could be a factor. But for this cartridge, pleating looks great and I wouldn't hesitate for instant to use it. In my experience, this P1 looks like a quality cartridge to me. I'd say the same if it was Wix/NG or Fram or any other reputable brand.

Have you contacted Purolator and asked if it is available yet? That # has been out for quite a while now.

Hello,
I work for FRAM. We will soon have TG and Ultra cartridges for your vehicle. Its new and the product release process is kinda slow. The plastic center tube has been used in modern cartridge filters for 20 yrs, well proven design. Parts should be released within the next 6 months and they will be made in USA.
BTW- Ecore is a brand of FRAM filter but we are flattered that people are referring to plastic center tubes as Ecore.

While some on this board may refer to many cartridges as ecore or "ecore style" based on the nylon cage similarity to the Champ designed ecore spin on, as comments on this and multiple other threads on true ecore spin-on oil filters generally illustrate, it wouldn't be interpreted as a compliment. As said though, two different type filters.

If the Ultra has wire mesh media support, I'll be all over it.

Yeah, yeah, I know that the plastic center tubes (whether they're truly 'E-core' junk or not) are out there and only a tiny percentage lead to failure, but with holes a quarter inch square to let torn media through and into the oiling system its just not a risk I enjoy taking. I'd much rather have either a center tube with finer holes, or a wire-backed media.
