Just wondering what is recommended for PS fluid. Truck has 155K on it and was wondering if the Valvoline Maxlife power steering fluid would be applicable. Do fords take an ATF for the fluid?
Yeah its got a bit of noise to it. I just bought the truck and its actually in really good shape. Just going through all the fluids and looking at the PS fluid today it appeared to be pretty dark.
Heres some advice, i recently put a new PS pump on my 03 mustang (which has a noisy pump, even the new ones noisy)so i decided id try some mobil 1 atf.......talk about noise city, i drained and refilled w/ just normal prestone PS fluid u get from walmart and voila noise gone. I figured the mobil 1 would work good but i dunno what it was, just made it REAL noisy
I've got a 91 Ranger with a noisy PS pump. I haven't flushed it throughly to have all Type F, but the previous owner just decided to use motor oil in (prolly why it whines). When I got it I did a decent flush with regular PS fluid. I added in the type F slowly.
Common Mercon/Dexron will be fine.
Do a series of turkey baster flushes [statring the car in between].
This may be all that you need.
Do you want to fool with taking lines on and off?
^^ Lines are easy to mess with. Suck fluid out of resevior. Disconnect return line. Get a hoseenbolt (hose small enough to fit on return line with a bolt in it) on the resevoir. Get a hose barb and some more hose. Connect the return line to the barb and extra hose. Put hose in favorite oil bucket.
Unplug connector to coil so truck will no start. Get assistant to try and start car. Get your PS fluid of choice. Have friend try and start car why you pour fluid in the resevior. Truck will pump out old PS fluid
