Oversized filter question for Honda Element

For a 2003 Honda Element, can I use a Fram 3593A/Microgard 9688 size filter as an oversized filter? The default is a 7317 size smaller filter. But the gaskets and threads are all the same size.

The reason I'm thinking this should work, is on my integra, which specs the larger size, most lube shops install the smaller 7317 size which newer hondas all seem to use. If you can go one way, you can go the other right (unless there's some oil pressure issue, or the larger diameter case won't physically fit)?

You can safely use the larger filter if there's enough room to install it. You might look at the Purolator Pure 1 line, as they are held in higher regard than the Fram.
14459/15610 are the part numbers for the small and large Honda filters in that line.

Typo ... 15610 should be 14610.

And actually, the 14459 and 14610 are pretty close in size (14610 actually has more media area, than the 14459).

The 14612 is the smaller (shorter) version of the 14610.

thanks for the info guys.

i know frams/microgards aren't the best, but both of these engines have ~150,000 miles each running mostly frams or equivalent cheap walmart filters, and they're still runnin great, so i'm not too worried about it. they just always seem to be the most convenient filters to grab when i'm getting oil. when i get my ferrari i'll be more particular

these are always shorter 5k-7.5k mile changes by the way

Go for the Purolator Classic. Much better construction than Fram filters and only costs $3.99 at Advance Auto. Can't really beat it for price vs. value.

If you can go to a wider filter you can run a Baldwin B7042 or B202 filter. Both are 3 11/16" X 5 3/8" long(that's the filter I run on my Honda S2000)
