oversize filter takes 1.5 sec to fill

8316 is 3/4 16. It is currently on one of my racing students 240sx, which the oversize is 3600. He thoroughly checked to make sure that the threads and gasket were the same.

The following are 3/4-16 with approximately the same gasket dia.:

3614
3600
3682
8316
8
16

these are 3/4-16 with a smaller dia gasket:
4316
4967

The 8316 is a bit of a mystery though, it's hardly shorter than the 3600, and the bypass apears to be different. I heard someone mention two bypasses? Ford recomends this filter (fl-2005 I think), instead of the 3600(fl-2005) on the 2.0 Zetecs, but not the SOHC 2.0.

I think something is different about the FL-2005 compared to the FL-400S. The Fram/ST/STP 3600 is the one specified in place of a FL-400S. I know this because my brother's 4.2L V6 F150 takes a FL-400S. It is also for most non-SHO tauruses. I have compared the FL-400S to the FL-2005 in walmart and they look like the exact same filter except for the different labels. I dont know what is the difference, but I assume there is something.

The difference MAY be TWO anti drain-back valves. The Purolator lists the 25230 as "Anti-Drain Back Valve: Yes, Clean side, Dirty side" (this is a filter w/ the by-pass valve on the threaded end).

You may be on to something there. Perhaps engine's requiring this filter have the potential for the oil to drain forward into the bearings, as well as the oil pan. If you look inside the filter you'll see a pad on a spring. this might seal against the threaded stud.

I stopped by autozone and compared the two (FL-400S and FL-2005). The 2005 did have a metal plate closer to the threaded end, so that you cant even see the closed end. I picked up an STP8316 and it was the same, and this particular STP had a silicon ADBV. I did notice too that the 2005 is spec'd for the DOHC focus like someone said and also the 4 cyl Escape. The 400S was $3.50 and the 2005 was $4.99 though. All I know is that the FL-400S rulez and its been fine on my Tercel for the past couple of days.

I recall that the Wix filter website gives gasket diameter. The FL400s is slightly smaller than the FL1A gasket, but I measured the flange and was able to use the FL1A on my wifes 3.0 L Ford v6.

Interesting to view the responses here than the Saturnfans site (which right now is down). I too just did an oil change today with the 3600 filter on my '95 SL1. The light always takes longer after an oil change to turn off. My guess is if there is any difference between the 3614 and 3600, its only 1/2 second. That said, for my next oil filter, I'm going to use the FL-400S. I almost sprang for the extra $0.78, but this was my first time using an oversize filter. The Motorcraft looks better than the 3600. Maybe I'll take a look at the 8316 when i'm at Wally World next.

Oh, somewhat related. The spec for the fill on my Saturn is 4.0 quarts with filter. When I bought 4 qts of Mobil 1 I never quite filled the oil pan. With this new filter I also bought a gallon of Rotella T syn, and used the entire gallon to bring the oil right to the full line!

Your car shouldn't be taking that much oil. With the short filter Saturns never take more than 4 quarts of oil. You may want to examine your filling procedure.

No matter what you car shouldn't have to fill the filter each cold start, which is what sounds like is happening. Perhaps a better ADBV is needed? Or maybe you need the two ADBVs like the 8316.

Nevermind, I'm an idiot. 4qts = 1 gallon. I get confused when I see those 5qt. jugs of Mobil1 sitting next to the Rotella gallon.

As for the oil light, its only right AFTER the oil change when the filter is dry. Once it gets filled up, all the subsequent starts take milliseconds to extinguish the light. Make sense?

the main difference in the two filters is one the 400s is a standard thread and the 2005 is a metric thread other than that my uderstanding is they are the same.

OK, this is typical, nothing to worry about. You can try and pre-fill the filter, but in your app, it's a little difficult.
