Changed the fluid (trans only, 6 qts) and filter on my 86 T Type with 26K. My son not realizing I had already added 6 oz of Lube Gard Red to the fluid as per instructions (1oz per quart of trans fluid) added an additional bottle, 10 oz. So now I have a total of 16 oz of Lube Gard mixed with my fluid. Will this harm anything? Should I suck out some fluid and replace with regular Dex III? Can't call the company until tomorrow.

No you can treat up to 2x the rate, not a big deal.

I prefer to use a quality fluid that doesn't need the lubegard though.

Maxlife Dex/Merc as well as Dexron VI don't need the additive.

You will be fine. I run Lube Gard red and Gunk Transmedic in both of mine. They both use Dex3 and the Chrysler is approaching 300k miles.

Wow,an 86 Lancer! And people say the 80s Chryslers were junk....I think not...

Never saw that but I feel somewhat better. I had no problems to begin with and was not looking to create any. I could find very little on overdoing it!

The transmissions actual capacity is something like 11-12 qts, so you're still under treated. That is unless you had put some in during a prior fluid change. Even still, I wouldn't worry.

Those are both low viscosity fluids and may not be fully compatible in a 1986 AT. Since Dex III is not licensed, it may be hit or miss too.

This is a fundamental issue right now with old Dex II and III specified ATs, IMO.

As for OP, I wouldn't worry much about an OD, but I'd consider draining a few quarts and refilling next OCI or so...

I still don't see the issue with the low viscosity shear stable fluids since the mineral Dex/Merc will shear to that point anyways. Unless people are changing the mineral fluid as soon as it starts showing signs of shear....every 15k miles??

Of course you could always go with a shear stable full viscosity fluid like Amsoil signature atf.

Lubegard emailed me with the statement that you can safely add up to 3oz per quart of Lubegard Red. I would inquire yourself to double check.

On a side note, I just learned that Lubegard Red is partly made up of PAO. I like Lubegard more and more...

Thanks for the info.

If anyone is interested the primary makeup of lubegard red is lxe esters, anti oxidants, phosphorus anti wear and a small amount of friction modifier. That being said this is a good thing to add to a mineral based DexronIII fluid but completely unnecessary with DexronVI or Maxlife
