A little curious on this one - had a shop change my oil.
When the car is parked and cold, the dipstick is past the full mark some. When the engine is just shut off or to a couple minutes after being shut off, it is just about at the full mark, just a tiny bit below it.

Manual says to check level after car is warm or after engine has run. Based on that, I would assume it's filled correctly and the extra in the top end is flowing back down to the sump.

So the question is, is the oil overfilled or filled correctly?

Typically some oil will drain from the filter and after the engine is run the level can drop 1/2 qt.

It's fine if it's past the full mark, as long as it isn't absurdly cartoonishly overfilled. The geometry of the oil pan relative to the crank above it usually leaves a ton of room.

Factor in the fact that in actual use the oil is actively being pumped and returned to the pan, the level being a little bit over full at idle isn't going to matter.

Funny my new VW Jetta OM states if oil is over 1/2 litre over capacity. Park car and have it towed to the nearest VW dealer.! No Kidding! Stupid Subaru dealer put 6 qts in my wifes Crosstrek. I dumped that qt. myself later at home. Pain. 139 dollar oil change done wrong. 6 qts was on the Invoice too.. Over capacity will affect PCV resonance and may affect engine operation in ways you wouldnt imagine. Foamed oil is not a good lubricant.

Yes Sir a VW that is overfilled will blow the rear main seal and screw up the PCV . On VWVortex a bunch of guys had RMS weeping and all they did was correct the level and weeping stoped . Engine's of today are not engine's of 30 years ago .
