Over 120000 mile on OEM Michelins?

I just replaced what appeared to be the original tires on a 05 Toyota Avalon. Tires had a date code of 1005, and still had factory wheel weights. Car had 120212 miles with almost 4/32s tread left, with even wear. They looked a little rough and snow is coming. Michelin MX4V S8 215/55-17V. Don't know what the S8 means, other than what I researched, that was the OEM tire. Replaced with Michelin MX4V. The originals had a tread wear rating of 50k miles. Wow.

I dont doubt it at all. Any set of tires that we get rid of have 40-60% of tread, and usually are at around 60k miles or less. We replace due to cracking and age, I cant say ive ever replaced by treadwear. Ive replaced tires in the 80k range with about 50% tread left, so I dont doubt that you did that well.
 
I had over 72K on a set of LTX's on my Dodge Dakota, there was almost 1/2 tread left on them. I think in my case they would have dry rotted before wearing out. Great made tires and rotation every 5K miles with weekly air pressure checks also helped.
 
I was at a tire shop recently, they were talking to a customer about tire choices, they said Michelins are hardly ever replaced due to tread wear, but usually dry rot/age, and i believe it too.

My Saturn had Michelin Hydro Edge tires from 2006ish.. so much tread was left.. and such nice tires they rode perfect too.. but they were cracking and dry rotting and I didn't feel safe anymore.. replaced them with Nexens, what a freaking mistake wish I sucked it up and bought Michelins...

My framer got about that out of the tires on his Silverado 2500HD.

Very conservative highway driving is how you do it, along with good tires.
 
I always use Michelin tires but never have I been able to get more than 50,000 miles on them before I get very close to the tread wear indicator. Now if I quit hanging turns, I'm sure I'll get more miles out of the tires.
 
I had sears michelins that were noisy, cracked, and at the wear bars when I got rid of them. They did at least hold the road as well as you'd hope.

I have no doubt they were the bottom shelf model that exists just so Sears can advertise deals on Michelins in radio ads.
 
Im not into creating debt for myself but put a set of 4 'Michys' on my credit card. $70 off a set of 4 at BJs. The car is such a joy to drive on them, incredible in the wet.

Even at low tread depth, they're still awesome gripping/handling/streeing tires. Worth it.
 
Our '04 Rainier had 85,000 on the OEM Michelin Cross-Terrains when I replaced them(with the same). No tread wear warranty.

I used Michelin Latitude X-Ice that lasted 6 winters, roughly 36k miles and there's still 8/32" left. They're still 2/32" above the snow bars! I replaced them this year with the XI-2 and will last until it dies or we sell.

I put XI-3's on the MINI in the hopes that I get the best snow traction over a long life, too!

I will always consider Michelin first, based on how long I'm keeping the car.

Michelin didn't have a summer performance tire for the MINI this spring so I bought Conti's. Great tire but they're only going to make it about 20k miles before they're toast. The new PSAS3 has my interest since they don't make the Pilot Sport in my size.
 
I just replaced the original set of Michelin Energy tires on my 2011 Crown Vic at 50K miles. They were cracking. I replaced them with Michelin Defenders they are supposedly a 90K mile tire!
 
I had the same OEM tires as your Avalon. Michelin MX4V S8 Energy tires came on my Mazda 6 from the factory and the tires were shot at 3/32 at 29,000 miles with 85% highway miles. They were 205/65R16 and had atrocious snow traction and would lose grip on hills in the rain. In my opinion they were terrible.

The longest wearing tires were on my Saturn SL and were Pirelli P4s and they were on there for what seemed like 80k miles.

120k miles is a lot for any tire. Unless the P.O. did insane highway miles it's possible they used snow tires in the winter and only used those in the summer or something.

Wish my tires lasted that long!! Im hoping to get many years from my Yoko Avid Tourings on the Accord. Lasting until she hits 200K would be nice =)

From everything I have seen, you were exceptionally fortunate to get that many miles out of a set of Pirelli tires. My last set of Pirelli tires were rated for 65,000, but had to be replaced at 40,000. I traded them for a set of Michelin Destiny, which I am still driving on. they have about 25,000 miles on them, and still have 8/32 depth.

Pirelli makes good tires, with great handling and braking performance. But no one should ever expect a set of Pirelli to make tread wear warranty.

It's conflicting experiences like this that make me believe the vehicle the tires are mounted on is what determines tread life more than what tire is installed. In my experience vehicles that had long tread life had long life with any brand installed. Vehicles which seem to eat tires faster don't seem to care what brand is on them.
 
That is incredible life. I think tires lasted about 60k on our Civic and Saturn; I get about 40k out of a set on the Jetta; and the Camry does about 30k by the looks of it.

When I stopped at a local tire shop to get quotes for a new set on the Tundra the guy there told me to expect 40k out the Destination LE2's or the Michelin ATX somethings--he didn't think either would last longer than that, based upon his experience.
 
The set of factory Michelin's only lasted 35,000 miles on our 2007 Odyssey. The set of factory Michelin's on our 2012 Odyssey are at 28,000 miles and will be lucky to make it to 35,000 miles. I think that is pretty sad for a 500 wear rated tire. The van sees mostly suburban driving, with the occasional long highway trip.
 
Going back 15 yrs to the England days, a friend of mine had a seriously crazy [censored] import Subaru Impreza upgraded from the factory, thing was a BEAST...he drove it like a fool the whole time and burned thru tires like crazy....his faves were the Michelin Pilot Sport, on a car like that it was SO easy to tell the difference...he would get the car sideways every day, and with the Michelins, it was so much more controllable in those situations. Oh did we have some fun!
