I saw this special a long time ago on I think 60 Minutes. That tells you how long ago it was-I don't watch CBS News or 60 Minutes anymore and I have not done so in a very long time.
Anyway, in this special report they showed these Ford plants in Mexico where Ford Escort cars were being built. The workers at the plant were considered to be relatively well off compared to most Mexican workers. They were paid a much lower hourly wage then workers building Ford Escorts in the USA. The Mexican workers lived in what could be considered to be a slum. You would have to see what their living conditions looked like yourself to believe it.
Obviously Ford could build Escorts in Mexico much cheaper then in the USA. Well, those Escorts were being sold for the exact same price in the USA as the Escorts built in the USA.
All of this outsourcing is exploitation of the workers. Instead of sweathouses in the USA they have sweathouses in India or Mexico or wherever. When people complain about unsafe working conditions in the USA those unsafe working conditions are exported to another country. The next time you buy a shirt think about the child labor somwhere that may have made that shirt in a dark, unsafe plant.
Meanwhile, the CEOs at the top of corporations like Enron (may that corporation rest in peace) are living the good life-at least until they get caught in criminal stuff. I saw a video that had been taken at the birthday party of the daughter of one of those bigshots-they had actors there dressed like Romans in the days of Rome and all kind of other stuff, including a lot of stuff that cannot be talked about here at this forum.
In the end, we all have to live with ourselves-with what we have done, and what we have not done, in life. I hope some of these people have a lot of time to reflect as they approach the end of their trails.
