i've been running Esso XD-3 0W30 for a while now, almost out. need to buy new oils.
i have two cars in my family, a 00 Acura (80000km) TL and a 00 Maxima (70000km).
i live in BC, Canada. temp normally between -3c and 5C in winter, 25-30 in the Summer.

TL mostly gets more then 10KM per trip,
and Maxima mostly gets less then 5 km per trip.
they are all running on 0w30 XD-3 with OEM filters, and on 6000km oil change interval.
(normally i let them warm for 5-10 seconds before start running)
now my question is should i stick with 0w30 or should i switch to something else like 5w30 esp for my Maxima due to the short distance between travel? if i need to switch to 5w30, which brand should i get for the best bang for buck?

sorry guys i know it's a

but plz help me out here... don's have the time to do a search, since final exam s are coming... already wanted to kill my self><

I'm using the XD-3 in our 02 Corolla (158K/km). I don't think that there would be any benefit in switching from a diesel rated product to a passenger car only lubricant, and it is hard to beat the price.

Just curious, but what benefits would a 5W30 give you over a 0W30 for short trip driving?

The 0w30 Esso is actually quite thick at normal temperatures. For instance, it's viscosity at 40c is around 70cst, compared to 60cst for a typical 5w30. So even though the 0w30 has got better cold cranking numbers for extreme temps (-35C), it's actually going to be thicker on a cold start at more normal temps. So a 5w30 will actually flow a little bit better when temps aren't super cold.

what are the cheap alternative syn oil for 5w30?

i thought XD-3 was a good oil for our car, maybe those information was outdated.... acturally i always thought why there were no "Energy Conserving" on those oils....

mention again i am always stick with 6000km-7000km OCI.

I'm in BC and I use either 5W30 or 10W30 all year. My dad uses just 10W30 all year. Either one is perfectly fine. I tend to prefer 5W30 in the winter just in case, but I would use either with confidence.

Keep an eye on the Canadian Tire flyer as they almost always have one of the synthetics on sale every week. I picked up a 5 quart jug of Pennzoil Platinum 5w30 for $22.99 a short while ago for example. I've also gotten Castrol Syntec 5w30 in the 4.4L jug for roughly that price too, and every 4-6 weeks they seem to run their own house brand of synthetic for around $19.99 for a 4.4L jug.

Since i still have about 5L left, can i get some 5w30 sync or dino of any brand and mix it with my XD3 0W30?

if i mix that with a castro GTX 5w30,with 50/50, will that be a sync blend?haha maybe i am dreaming...

save your money for text books
the Esso Extra 5w30 mineral oil in those short OCIs with the short distance trip miles is the perfect solution at 6k km....an SM rated PCMO that won't damage your expensive CATs

both engines would run fine on Esso's 5w20 also....even lower cold startup viscosity
both engines are known easy on oil, no need for expensive synthtics with the short distance driving and required short OCIs or no turbo
