Haven't posted any pics yet but our boy is now 3 weeks old. Born at 24 weeks 4 days on April 26th, original birth date was August 13th. The last 3 weeks have been heitic. Doing good for as premature as he was. Had PDA surgery on Friday so it's all up hill now. He's putting weight on and more active by the day.

Yeah will need to save the energy. He's already pulled the breathing tube once and starting grasp the other wires.. give him a couple weeks on those.

Eric,

I know exactly what you are going through. Our twin girls were born at 24 weeks as well at 595 and 598 grams.

We also went through all the acryonmns - including PDA surgery, laser eye surgery (twice each), as well as intestinal bypass.

They recently turned 3 and are doing fantastic.

132 days in NICU.

Your son will be great.

Good to hear they're doing good!! It seems like the hospital was trying to scare us rather than give us hope.. but he's proving them all wrong. He weighed 660 grams at birth. So far everything else is good.. no signs of NEC or eye problems (probably have to wait on that one). 132 days in NICU ouch.. we're hoping for July but it maybe August.

You really do not want to rush the process.

I know it's very stressful, and you feel helpless at times, but the nurses and docs do know what's best for your son right now. But, do ask a lot of questions. There should also be a social worker at the hospital that will help you any non-medical questions you may have - utilize them. We still keep in touch with all of the NICU personnel and we moved out of state.

Our girls came home in July and August and they were delivered in April as well. When they came home, they only weighed 3 lbs.

If you have any questions for me or my wife, please LMK.

Wow! It is truly amazing what humans can endure... Both children and their parents.

Our kidlet has endured some pretty wicked stuff too. She is now 10 months old and has had two heart surgeries. She has also spent her fair share of time in both the NICU and PICU.

In between surgeries she has done quite well, but it's still trying for us.
We acknowledge our many blessings and take solace in believing we appreciate our child more than those parents who "have it easy". I don't know if that belief is true, but it makes the hard stuff a little more bearable.

It is going to feel like you have to wait forever to get to the "normal" times, but as strange as it sounds try to enjoy your current adventure. You will look back on these times and marvel at the experience.

Soon enough you're going to have a kid who falls asleep while eating, just like everybody else.

We'll take your blessings. Thank you. I tell you what, you pray for us, we'll pray for Eric Smith, Eric will pray for someone else and so on. Before you know it, we won't have to worry about this kind of xcrap anymore.

Yuk... that's amazing two heart surgeries. Kids sure are tough.

Chuckerants.. we're defiantely not trying to rush. We're just glad he's okay and fighting. But he's pushing himself.. I think he wants to go home. Already off the vent onto the bipap and their switching to the CPAP sometime soon (breathing all on his own). Might even switch beds in the next couple weeks since he's starting to maintain his own body temp. That's enough to make this dad proud, actually mom to.

Daughter born with the cord around her neck, spent the first few days of her life in there. Make sure you rest, you can't take care of the baby if you're not awake! One thing's for sure , your sense of fear gets re- calibrated by stuff like this !

All the best

Post of the year IMO.

My prayers go out to each and every one of you. My grandson was 3 lbs at birth and is now 15 and Very active (football, soccer, and baseball) and is making a 3.5 gpa. I hope you have the same results we did. Ask questions and never doubt the little ones
ability to do anything.

I will think of you both (Eric and Yuk) in my meditations. You reaffirm that I have lived a very blessed life. I'm thankful that I didn't have to face these challenges ... even though I would not face them alone. We had it easy in comparison. I'll shed a tear or two in the process of pondering this today. It will be mixture of thankful joy and being humbled by the grace that I've witnessed.
