O'Reilly Autoparts - AVOID!!

As far as brick & mortar chains, I've found OR to be one of the few still usable for good quality parts. I changed the fuel filter on my truck a couple weeks ago and went to OR because they had Wix filters in stock for $20.

Auto Zone and Advance just seem to stock China junk. Anything decent needs to be ordered, at which point you may as well use Rock Auto instead. I do use them for things like MAF cleaner, wire brushes, Dorman Help! junk, and occasionally spark plugs if they have Densos on sale, but other than that, useless.

Wow, what a nightmare!

Oreilly's is taking over VIP here in northern new england. VIP did, and still does, tires and service, with a parts store attached. Close to a pep boys, but 1/2 shade better.

They couldn't be doing this merger any worse. There's O'Reilly's store brand stuff like oil and car wash on the shelves, but without explanation. Still a VIP sign on the door. Buy parts, get an O'reillys receipt. (And it looks like a 1980s carbon copy from a dot matrix printer.) The store has one phone number and when you call for something not offered by the gentleman on the phone they get in a huff and say "hold please."

The ads, on radio and in direct mail, don't mention O'reillys taking over parts or what they plan to do. This merger was quietly announced last Xmas!

VIP was hit or miss on parts pricing, but had no internet presence, absurd in 2013. So, if and only if I was generous or desperate for a 3rd opinion on price, would I call a store to get one. Probably tiresome for their employees, but, yet, their problem. Hopefully Oreillys is better for this. List price on a VIP saturn s-series brake rotor is $20.99, last I checked Advance it was $47.99! Even with coupons, a rip off. I guess from this thread O'reillys won't be as competitive.

O'Reilly bought out New England's VIP Auto Parts in late Decemeber and as of yet have not converted stores over.Talk about a slow gestation period.By now hopefully anyone who got wind of the deal has lost any respect for them. You dont spend Millions and millions for another company and not fully complete the business plan.2013 is half over already!!

Sadly, O'Reillys is one of the best stores near me. That tells you just how bad most auto part stores are in this area. The sign outside their store always has the "Looking for help" message on it and there is always a new employee there when I go in, usually somebody who looks about 18 and has never gotten their hands dirty. When I do go in, I usually have the part number written down or it's because I want a promotion item or a posted sale.
The O'Reillys here is usually cheaper than Autozone and the local NAPA service is pretty bad.
Compared to most local auto part stores, RockAuto has shined.

When I emailed O'Reilly Auto a few weeks ago about a bad experience I had at one of their Tampa stores, they sent me a nice boilerplate response. I've attached it below...just fill in your name and the store's location where you had your most recent bad experience with an O'Reilly Auto and you can save yourself the trouble and time of having to contact them...you'll get same results I got after writing them....nothing!

I miss the NAPA at the end of the street. And the Jeep dealership that was just over a mile away. I stopped driving Jeeps and an Auto Zone popped up where Midas used to be. The local indy chain is there too. Advance Auto is moving in too. the Marshfield AZ is OK. The Weymouth store is very good. The Plymouth AA is right up there too. Service and product knowledge first rate. It is the people. For anything tricky , I research on line before I shop. I buy most of my BMW parts from worldpac outfits on line. Lately ,it has been Parts Geeek.

What were you expecting? Retail complaints are passed down and dealt with at the store level. They're taken very seriously. Really, what were you personally looking to get in return for your complaint?

^^ I'm not expecting anything, and I'm not looking to get anything personally in return. I did O'Reilly a favor pointing out shortcomings in their operation so they don't lose more customers in the future. I don't have to apologize for anything.

I do think it would have been nice for the company to notify me that they had actually made and completed corrections instead of just providing lip-service that they were moving to correct things. If I go back to the same store, I don't want to have to experience the same nonsense I did last visit. Just saying...

In my recent experiences ALL parts chains suck big time!! I only buy my oil at Walmart (I always get excellent customer service there) and all my parts come from Nissan dealerships.

I'd really love to see the parts chains go belly up. Their prices are ridiculous and their customer service is atrocious.

Yes and no. I'm still of the opinion that Napa sells top quality parts - just at top quality prices. Advance seems to carry a lot of the good brands (BWD, Moog, etc.). ANY of them that hire ANYBODY without any kind of automotive repair training or background though should go out of business.

As far the counter folks at the major auto stores, I'd say with some exceptions your description could pretty much fit any of them. I do agree however that O'R is right at the bottom when it comes to price, sales, selection and inventory. Since they opened stores in this area, after trying a few times, I've found little or no reason to frequent their stores. In a word, lousy.

Otoh, Advance Auto Parts has saved me a bunch of money over the years by using their online codes, up to ~40% off. The key is knowing what you want/need, ordering online with code, and picking up in store. That keeps the counter/sales interaction to a minimum. After Advance local Napa store is decent.

Advance though is currently looking for buyer, if and when that happens things could change.

Advance has had itself for sale for like 2 years though. If Napa were smart, Napa would purchase them and start adding some GPG p/n's to the inventory.

BTW, this was the second distributor from O'reilly's.

I've also noticed lately that many of the parts people basically know nothing.

Its hardly fair to denounce an entire corporation for one bad part. Maybe he had bad luck and got a bad part. Maybe it was operator error, who really knows. But the 'good' part from the other store probably came from the same manufacturer.

Easy there bud, I'm not trying to denounce an "entire corporation". BTW, this was TWO distributors from them not just one bad part. The other good part was actually a Motorcraft unit from Carquest. I still use O'reilly for some things like oil and filters, but haven't had good luck with many of their parts, or Autozone's for that matter.

The Kragens around here were slow to convert to O'Reilly also. I think it took at least 6-12 months for all the branding and signs to switch over. But I really wasn't eager to see it change anyway, so I didn't care. The store employees probably felt the same way, thus maybe dragging their feet with the conversion.

Prices have been pretty good for me, only a little higher than the internet sites but very reasonable for a physical local store. I'm glad to have them around.
I do notice they always have some jacked up "list price" on the receipt, next to the "sale price" which is way less. I think everything I've ever bought has had that gimmick on it.

You mean like their "List Price" of $11.17/quart for Maxlife Nextgen?

Yet again......Went in today, used a coupon.....guy spent 5 minutes looking back and forth between the coupon & the monitor, went to get my change, and didn't come back for I swear nearly 5 minutes. Stood at the end of the counter talking with another employee and starts doing something on the computer down there. I finally yell down 'dude, can I have my change please'?? FML. WORST. SERVICE. EVER.

I figure it's so when a shop charges customers $9 for a cheapo copper spark plug, they can say "well list is $12.40 but we got you the shop discount."
