ok guys I have a 1986 mercury capri 302 4 bbl 5 speed 270000 miles and it uses oil and leaks some. the car is driven very little the last couple years since I got a truck. im thinking either Valvoline MaxLife 5w30 or would Valvoline MaxLife 10w30 be a better choice? or maybe 10w40? the motor is really worn and smokes a little bit at idle and really smokes a lot when u get on it hard. 10w40 on the 5.0 and 5w30 on taurus.
I'd probably put a 10W-40 in the 302.
Maxlife would be a good choice.
Use Maxlife 5w30 in the Taurus.
Ford recommended a 5w30 for the Vulcan for years.
A quart every 3-4K isn't enough to worry about and is better than some cars do from new, even running high spec forty grade oils.

ok guys I think 10w40 and 5w30 is what im gonna go with. cold start shouldn't be much of a issue with 10w40 because I never drive it much in the cold anyway.

oh yea guys I got to thinking, its using a quart in 2 to 3000 miles not 3 to 4000 miles, so I add a couple quarts between changes( about 5000 miles)

oh yea I know that, that's why I will never live up north. I hate winter. it has got below 0 some here this winter but it don't happen much! I like summer more as I get older.

30 weight Maxlife is thicker than most 30 weight oils.
So you are going quite far from the 20 weight which is not consuming that much.
Try Maxlife 5w20 first.

but the 3.0s were specs for 5w30s for a while till ford backspec'd so its perfectly ok. and also mileage has loosened up everything. a thick 30 will be fine

If you intend to use a high mileage oil stick to the same brand you have been using to date so not to mess that much with differing additive chemistry. ie. if you have been using Valvoline use Valvoline High Mileage oil if you have been using Castrol use Castrol High Mileage oil etc etc.
Some will disagree and say its not relevant I don't care, at this vehicle's age best to try and keep additive chemistry same as possible IMO to avoid possible cleaning process within the engine when changing brands limit the risk of exposing false seals and further leaks.

20 grades are 20 grades. They all meet whatever viscosity characteristics required to meet the 20 grade spec.

OP. If your burning a quart every 2000 miles a high mileage oil in the same grade isn't going to achieve anything except making your wallet lighter.
Going a grade thicker and being a High Mileage oil might help but it truly depends on many things.
So you've got a burner eh. I'd love to see you use some mos2 and see if it affects the start up smoke and the oil consumption. Its 8 bucks a can and available at napa.
Liqui-moly makes the stuff. If you used the mos2 AND the motor oil saver you could likely nurse lots of miles out of that 5.0.
