It's lunchtime, and I had an idea.
I have a few quarts of redline 10w40, and maybe some 10w30, left over from a past purchase. I want to get rid of it, but I don't want to buy more redline do to a complete redline fill. So, I was thinking of using 1 qt redline 10w40 mixed with 5 qts of say mobil-1 10w-30. There's been a lot of this going on, with UOA's showing no harm done. But then the thought crosses my mind, why not mix in other brands, especially all the top UOA performers and ones with heavy add packs. There's been plenty of mixes posted with no worse than fair results I think, and all oil is compatible with each other.
So, at 1/qt portions for a 5 quart system:

code:

oil Vis-100C Vis-40C

Redline 10w-40 15.3 102

Mobil 15w-50 17.4 125

Delvac 15w-40 15.5 117

Mobil 0w-20 8.4 43

G.Castrol 0w-30 12.0 54 (estimated)

estimated viscosity average of 13.7, 88.2

The oils I chose were because they were easily available. Any opinions on a 6th oil to add?

And the reasons I chose the following other than their viscosities:
redline- for it's esters and high moly
delvac- because it's a HDEO and it's add pack (magnesium)
German Castrol- for it's supposedly unique base oil?
Mobil 15w-50- should have high ZDDP?
Mobil 0w-20- boron and base oil?

so, how crazy is this?

I'd rather see you do back-to-back OCIs with UOAs of the 1qt RL 10w40 and 5qts M1 10w-30 mix with the OCI's at least 6K miles each.

Better yet, would be the same schedule done with 1qt RL 10w30 and 4qts M1 0w20.

I'd agree w/427Z on the M1 0w20. I've had very good success w/M1 and mixing. I usually mix a blend of GC w/ M1 0w20 in my Civic and a blend of Amsoil 5w30 and M1 0w30 Racing and M1 0w20 in wife's Chry T&C...all with excellent UOA's on 15k miles. I'd love to see the Redline mixed w the M1 0w20. Good luck with your home brew.

I'm still not into exotic mixes. My rule is no more than 1 quart of a "correction fluid" to thicken or thin a crankcase of "base" oil. This is why I choose 5w-30 Mobil DCO as a "base" oil. It has the G-III basestock and less additives to meet GF-4 @ 10.5 cSt. I add some Mobil 1 15w-50 5/1 resulting in 12cSt (per visc calc) and a boost of additives plus PAO. If you mix all those oils you mentioned, you're asking for trouble. Keep it simple.
