Normally , i would never use and never recommend any of my friends to use a TG filter. but after reading a few bitogers comments on here, ive been using the TG filter more often. Changed the oil in my buddys 4.3 chevy the other day, told him to get a TG, and another friend also with a chevy he handed me a TG filter to change his oil, usually I would have scoffed and told him to return it, but i spun it on the filter mount without a word. So, are the TG filters not as bad as some think? I still refuse to use an OCOD though.

TG`s are excellent filters. I use them all the time.
The numerous threads on BITOG with cut open used and unused Fram TG show it is miles above the OCOD. Use with confidence.
The biggest issue people have with Fram OCOD is the price. You can get a better filter (IMO) for less money (i.e. Purolator Classic). Also, photos of cut open OCODs leave little to be desired.

Id say the tough guard is equal to the p1 in quality.
Heck, even the OCOD has serviced many, many millons of vehicles over the years.
Tough Guards are one of my favorite filters, and I'm a filter nerd!
My first choice for longer OCI's or when I'm wanting very high filtering efficiency, like during a cleaning treatment.

I NEVER used Frams until they came out with the Ultra.
TG is a good quality filter - use with confidence.
It is becoming increasing difficult to find a name brand filter that does not operate well. Heck, I ran an OCOD in dusty, mountainous conditions; then drove from California to New Hampshire. The total OCI was 6,500, and the filter did its duty just fine.

I'll use the Ultra Synthetic Fram oil filter with the silicon anti-drainback, but the rest of the line is the same old glued cardboard stuff that sells for the same or more than better made filters.

Is it weird if I would use one on my own truck without question, but would think twice about using one on a friend or family members car?
The tough guards are premium in my mind. The silicone anti drain back valve paired with the thicker canister and synthetic blend media make a durable and high efficiency filter. I think the end caps have proved themselves durable in the cut open used filters and seem to give the media more room to move than steel so there is less waves in the media. I would use a tough guard pretty much before anything cellulose based but will start using my Fram Ultra stash next.
