Onkyo and Denon

This is almost turning into a modern vs vintage audio discussion.

I agree with other posts here about how people cared about audio more in the past than they do now. Hell, look at what some of that vintage audio cost new. Not exactly chump change. People were willing to pay for the best. Because of that high demand, competition was up, and there were higher quality offerings back then as far as build quality and aesthetics. This is certainly one subject where "they don't make 'em like they used to" applies.

All of my setups are powered by vintage equipment. I listen to them nearly every day. The look, touch, feel, reliability, and sound are unmatched by all but the highest end (and very very expensive) audio today. I'd rather play with a beautiful sounding sub-$300 vintage silver face than a $2,000 black plastic modern unit.

I love this era of audio. One of my biggest regrets was selling my Pioneer sx-850 :(

Power supplies....back in the day the heavier the amplifier the better the amplifier. Huge toroid transformers, giant capacaitors, discrete Mosfets, Transistors or whatever. Class A or AB or both. My 100 watt, 2 channel Denon amp is about 70 pounds. I used to have a Yamaha receiver that was at least 50 pounds. Nowadays with switching power supplies and class D amplification, integrated chips etc, there is little weight to components. As far as speakers, I have never cared for planar's, ribbon or electrostatic speakers. They are unique sounding and can accurately reproduce a range more precisely than diaphragm speakers but I HEAR them, can always identify them. I suppose peoples taste is subjective. I like speakers that can get you arrested by angry neighbors. Not happenin' with ribbons.

Uncle Dave, I think I have those same B&W's or maybe mine might be the little brother not sure. I have had them for at least 20 years, they sound really good. The only speaker I've had longer than these B&W are my Dynaco A10's

I think mine are 704's Id have to see the driver to know if yours are identical. I was shocked to see the price new at 1500 each.

Those dynacos look killer.

ARCO,
IIRC, my CIZEK were Model 1 (2way/8ohm) w/ controls at the bottom of the cabinets below the woofer. I never understood what the controls were for as I couldn't hear any differences when I adjusted them. But man, it's been a long time since I've had'em. Strangely, I may actually still have some liturature on them. I may still have some lit on some older equipment from my past...I'll have to give'er a look. 🤔

Dynaco's look like this and IMO was one of the greatest speakers of all time

I've got an extra driver. Had to take the cover off to see. As nice as these are - and they do sound great - they can only take about half of what I have to give. (First world problems I know)

I've never replaced my 4412 and10s or Cerwin Vega 380or even 280 SE's from a power handling standpoint.
I had the Cerwins prior to the JBL's they weren't as accurate as the JBL- but they were louder.

Back when I sold speakers the best thing in our room were the acoustic research AR-910's.

Love to hear those Dynacos.

Believe it or not in the early 2000's I had a pair of AR LST's. I sold them :( I got stupid money from someone in Japan for them. They were great sounding speakers but at the time I had about 10 pair of speakers and I had to sell some off. Of course I purchased other audio gear with the money so not all was lost :)

Oh, we certainly know what happened there. :)

Darn all of you with your fancy speakers. All of mine are low end/budget stuff. Probably the nicest ones I currently own are these Jamo C607 towers, currently sitting in storage...

Most of my music listening these days is through these PSBs at my desk:

Do the Focal sound warm and what is your main amp you listen on any favorite amps you like or integrated you like or like to try. I know it's a loaded question lol just curious

I read an article back in the day when they had blind listening competitions between half a dozen or so home speakers. Believe it or not the Bose 901's came in second, but just barely to some large floor standers that cost 4X as much. I have a set of 901's among other speakers and they sound great to me. Different than traditional box speakers. I also have some RTR's which I like. I have had JBL's and Polk's over the years. The best sounding speaker for the price to my ear is a set of two way bookshelf Yamaha's I paid like 100 bucks for a couple of decades ago. I have mucho stereo gear and speakers. Here is a 1980's two channel setup that is stacked in the garage right now.

That's a SWEET system!!!! Mitsubishi made some killer master receivers back in the 70s-80s. My best friend in high school had that flagship 80s era Pioneer receiver and these huge RTR speakers that would literally shake his parents' whole house haha!!

Onkyo and Sansui were my favs' - after Macintosh.

I Ilke all the new little pods and bars and stuff - but lets be honest it does't get it done like the old school stuff.

Im using the same amp I've used since 90, a Mcintosch MC2500. Its so powerful you can arc weld with it literally lit my JBL 4412's - on fire.

Im currently running Bowers and Wilkins and have turned it down so as not to blow them up.

This is your system? Man you probably have the best system on BITOG!!

I remember touring the Omni Theatre in Dallas when I was in high school on as field trip (maybe around 1985). The amp room was an air conditioned room with banks upon banks of Threshold amplifiers. We were in awe!!

Back in the earlier days of my learning what this equipment was all about(before having any money or knowledge), my buddy Patric owned equipment that was so big & loud that it would make me laugh 😃 just to see its enormity sitting there in his basement/family room.

I find tower speakers very problematic due to the wave front floor bounce. I'm sure some designer has addressed this but never heard a good one vs. a decent stand mounted monitor. But, I will say my good friend - who can still hear above 10Khz, still loves his Snell Model E. He met Peter at the factory in Haverhill, MA. Those arent towers per say, more at "floorstander".

He drives these with a Yamaha B-2 V-FET output power amp , which was one of the best transistor amps back in the 70's

Don't ignore the new Mission QX-2 speakers ( British) or IOTA integrated amp ( was to be the new NAKAMICHI ) this is were the real affordable high end is. You will have a killer system for under a grand ( minus ancillaries )

The Klipsch vs ELAC vs. JBL vs. Triangle Borea and on and on, they are just very coloured mid fi offerings; Not to say you cant have some fun with them, but they are not High(est) Fidelity.

Focal's sound great. Funny before I moved I liked them but they really became eye opening in my new house. I think it's because they are in a much larger room. These speakers excel at anything I throw at them. I listen to classical, classic rock and heavy metal and I am satisfied with their performance on it all. I'm a Focal fan for the most part. I have other speakers that sound great too, so much stuff out there :)

My main amp for the Focal's is my Luxman l-590ax For me one of Luxman's best SS integrateds they ever made. I kind of got off the merry go round of amps after I purchased this. I still have a lot if tube stuff I swap in once in awhile, but I sold most of my SS and tube stuff because audio just go to crazy for me at the time. I like good gear but all the magic stuff out there make me cringe.

How far from the floor would you say is optimal for the lowest driver to be?

As for the the hate for Bose goes, I have a 45yr old of Bose 501 Series II. Never touched and still sound marvelous while they are direct/reflecting. Hope they last as long as I do.

Have you ever heard a set of Shahinian's? I have a set of the compass, they excel at trying to minimize the "bounce" I can put my compass in any small room and not worry about placement and they sound great. They get lost in a bigger room, but the obelisk or the arc would be the go to for that situation.
http://shahinianacoustics.com/

I've hear some Snell speakers before, my recollection is they sounded great.

As for the hearing thing, I'm pretty lucky and still have good hearing for my age, I have the classic NIHL dip from my time in the Army but I still test above average.
