One in four homebuyers want to move, here are the top ten cities they want to move to.

Read the entire thread - interesting points of view.

Assuming I didn't need to live in the city proper, I would live in most of those areas if someone handed me the keys to a nice house in a nice neighborhood and a good job. Wanting to move and actually moving are quite different.

What the article doesn't tell you is where are the people from. People are leaving the Northeast for Florida and California for Vegas / Phoenix because there voting with their wallet. Yes, its politics that caused the exit, but its money and quality of life that are the net affects and why people move.

My wife and I thought we would end up in Florida - from South Carolina. We think its full now, so maybe we will stay put.

With the free second hand smoke, being surrounded by gamblers with behavioral issues nonstop. Watching people self destruct every day.

Sounds like quite the place to work.
There are far worse jobs than working in Casinos. Social services? Repomen? Debt collectors?

Couldn't pay me enough to spend a 8-12 hour shift having non stop smokers blowing cigarette smoke in my face. Going home with the stench of smoke. Watching people self destruct.

I rather be a garbage man making a hundred dollars a day. At least I would be doing something that was helping society and I could be proud of.

Our waste management pays up to $70k/year, granted though I believe they are union, Teamsters maybe?

For somebody older who has bills and cannot wait for somebody more senior than them to leave in order to get a spot, this works well.

If your already a smoker does wondering around in it all day matter? Asking - don't know. I would presume that is there target employee. I can't imagine a non smoker being able to even do that job all day.

Is the smoke out there that bad - I haven't been to Vegas in years. Even years ago the ventilation systems in the big casino's seemed to be pretty good at filtering it out. Around here everyone seems to have those e-cigarettes, which are supposed to be worse for them - but much better for everyone else that happens into it.

It depends on the person. I smoke but I have rules where I smoke. I can't smoke cigarettes inside and can't be inside anywhere that stinks of it, like a casino. I'll rip a big bong inside, light a joint inside, but never a cigarette and I hate cigars.

There was a thread about his a few weeks ago. Some find the smell of what's coming out of your bong offensive. I don't - but that's just me. (And I don't smoke anything). I can't stand cigarette smoke though.

Yes-it's money first-politics a second factor-and there are other things I'm sure.

I completely agree and understand. Smoking is not a social norm. I'll go into an alleyway to light a cig instead of right in front of a business.

Sorry, I should have clarified - I'll do marijuana stuff inside my house/property but not in public ever. I can't smoke cigarettes inside any building. The one time I "tried" to was in the casino of a cruise ship but that did not last long.

Pew,

Funny you mentioned $70k for a garbage man. Although San Francisco has drastically changed over the past few years, I read an article about five years ago than SF garbage men can easily make $200k a year, retire after 20 years-, and a great pension. Very decent living if one can suck it up for 20 years. I did not accredit the article but assume some of it was holistically accurate. And without a doubt, being a garbage man is very hard AND dangerous work.

I just took a quick Google for Chicago's and it's all over the place, the highest anywhere from $47k to 90k.

Would have to guess overtime is likely feasible. But, being a garbage man is a very hard job, OT being a garbage man is likely even harder, and puts one at higher risk from fatigue, at an already dangerous job.

I'm a Realtor in Orlando. It's not. Most of my out of state inbounds are from Western states. California, Washington, Colorado, Nebraska (west to me!). California must be going through a mass exodus with as many that are trying to move here. Had a few from Ohio, too.

Can confirm Tampa and Cape Coral are very popular outside of Central Florida / Orlando area.
I have friends that live in Ozona on a beach front property.. It is nice I could live there with a smile on my face.

There is less and less promise to Texas specifically because those 4 far too blue cities control Texas and foreign (Californian and others) invaders come here to escape there but continue to vote wrong as they did there. Also, Texas has HIGH property taxes and yes, no state income tax. Texas was a great place 50 and more years ago, now not as much.
I agree some things have changed for the worse, but look a little deeper. The 4 inner cities of Dal, Hou, SA and Austin are not aligned with Texas values, but they are mostly in decline while the burbs and exurbs are on the grow. Texas on the statewide level is still a great place. Heck the valley is turning red, that was unthinkable 10 years ago.

I also believe the ones fleeing Cal are the productive types that want a change for the better. The majority I believe see that they don't want to replicate the Cal disaster here. If even 60% believe that, then its a net gain for TX values. As for "HIGH property taxes", Abbott just passed monumental property tax relief.

This is why Northern Virginia sucks for anyone not working for the FedGov:

What is the average salary for a Trash Collector at Fairfax County, Va in the United States? Based on our data, it appears that the optimal compensation range for a Trash Collector at Fairfax County, Va is between $40,766 and $52,190, with an average salary of $45,831.

The county seat is in the City of Fairfax and host several intelligence agencies including CIA, NGIA, NRO, NCC, and the Office of the Director of National Intelligence. With a median household income of $112,436, Fairfax County is the second richest county in the US.

But it seems like they're getting what they pay for:

What is really funny is tourists that see less than 5% of a city thinking they know all about it.
I live in Vegas. Came for a job (not casino related). Stayed because I like it here, and the cost of living is 1/3rd that of Santa Clarita, CA. That means I can buy what I want, whenever I want, go wherever I want, whenever I want. If I was back in Cali I'd have to budget.
In the last year, I've been on the Strip twice, in a casino once. A show (Carrot Top) and a hockey game. My average is probably once a year. In fact, I used to go to casinos more often as a tourist than I do as a resident.
Las Vegas is a lot more than smokey casinos. Of course, if you are a tourist and that's all you see....

The wife and I just moved to the Houston area a couple months ago from the Ozarks and it was driven by my work. I don't mind the heat, I'm not in the city proper (about 40 miles out), we're sick of winter, the area is a "fit" for me and my family in a lot of ways, I don't have to deal with a lot of traffic unless I need to go to Houston during the week. We're not in a flood zone, and are far enough inland to not get destroyed by a hurricane, but close enough to the beach when we want to go, about 90 minutes. We both like it here. Vegas? We drove through there once on vacation and stayed about 20 minutes before we couldn't stand to be there. No thanks. We can do the mountains on vacation and I love the beauty of Colorado, but wouldn't want to live there.
