Once per year OCI

Hello to all,

Over here in California/Los Angeles the gas price is pretty high now so I was wondering at least in one of my car/truck has anyone thought of going to 1 year OCI's???? If so what synthetic oil would you use and what oil filter can be used? Personally I only average about 10K in my truck since I only drive it on the weekends. Because of this condition I might do this on my truck.

Recently I just bought 6 quarts of Kendall GT-1 synthetic on sale from PEP BOYS but as a norm now I have settled mainly on Mobil Super Synthetic in 5w30 and using a Purolator Pure Once oil filter. Are these OK to consider once per year OCI's???

On either PCMO if I am running over 7K on conventional synthetic should hold up for 10K. But there is no way to know for sure unless you provide the used oil analysis for your truck. I am sorry Durango I can not help you further.

I am sure either one will go the distance for you no problem. Just remember always be on the safe side though. If your oil changes cost around $40, that is only 26 cents/day over a 6 month period. Kendall Syn can go 10k in a healthy engine under fairly normal operation.

I run my synthetic (PP, Mobil 1, Castrol Edge) for 7500 miles. If you want to go 10,000 miles, I would use Mobil 1 Extended Performance, it's guaranteed to do 15,000 so 10,000 is no sweat.

My LS400 has 12-14k/12mo OCI's with synthetic and 1 oil filter for many years. The engine is running great without problems.

When I had conventional oil the OCI's were reduced by half, but the filters were 1 year.

Mobil 1 Extended Performance is what i would use. great oil for 10,000 oci as stated. Put a Mobil 1 oil filter on there too and your set.

In the oil filter forum one of our members said he had exchanged email’s with Puralator tech support and they said Pure 1 filters are meant to be used for 5000 miles or less. Puralator is supposed to be coming out with a high milage filter but i do not think it is readily available yet.

5K? On a pureone? Someone at Purolator likes to fleece people for money.

The sooner you buy their filters the more money they make

I have seen 10k P1's and they can hold up to it.

once a year oci's will be fine if engine gets a chance to warm up 10,000 mile 1 yr is fine

Years ago, I approached Mobil (Oz), and after much wheedling, they agreed that a year on M1 was OK...whether 5,000km, or 25,000km, a year.

Hi guys and good morning,

Just got to work when I read all your most informative postings. I also had thought of using a premium synthetic oil for this possible new standard way of doing my OCI's but rmemebr it's just a thought. Of course if I decided to go this route most likely I would choose Castrol or Mobil oils premium synthetic oil possible and the best oil filter to go with it. I never thought of really doing this but those pesky gas prices contimue to head skyward with now real end in site. Since my truck is going in for a service anyway I might discuss this with my mechanic of what he thinks. If this happens I won't consider doing this until towards the end of the year. I admit it would make things less complicated in my mind and would free up some cash for other things like new brakes and new shocks which the Durango could use. The shocks haven't been changed since I bought the truck back in 01 anyways and everyone has said to get them changed. I guess that might be my next project.

Good morning to you too!

The most prudent thing to do (to ensure that your truck will be safe) is to run 2 consecutive used oil analysis on your current program, then run one at the same interval with your new oil, then incrementally increase your OCI while keeping UOA trends in mind.

Or, depending on your current maintenance schedule (and if you don't want to spend the $$ on the UOA) then do as you are thinking as a high quality synthetic with a good filter and run your once per year. The general experience of many of our users here is that you won't have a problem.
