HPL oil and mixing with other brands

Been seeing people mentioning that they are mixing HPL oil with other brands .

Could be just using up an extra quart or two since they dont have enough for a full oci.

My suv has very low miles and takes 8 quarts ,so running pure HPL oil for a short oci such as 4-5K seems like it would be real overkill.

I have been buying Mobil 1 Extended Performance or Mobil 1 Truck and SUV, whatever one Walmart has in stock .

So in my case not sure there would there be an real benefit to adding a quart or two per oci ?

I'd buy one brand of oil and use that. If you plan on using HPL take full advantage of the product and stretch the OCI to get the full value and benefit of it. If you think you're going to add it to your favorite store bought oil to make it better I don't see the logic or the benefit.

When mixing HPL, people are often referring to their engine cleaner. (HPL Engine Cleaner SAE 30/40) It's a fully formulated oil with a CI-4 add pack but straight adipate ester base oil. It's fully compatible with any oil you want to add it to at a 1:6 ratio.
Exactly.

In terms of actually mixing oil, I would expect ESP alone would perform as good or better than some mixture of ESP/EP with HPL.
Balance is important, and one is morelikely to mess with it than not when mixing different oils.

Appreciate the people who chimed in .

Never been a fan of mixing brands in the past so did not see a reason to to do it now .
HPL Engine Cleaner can be mixed with any brand or Group oil, to prepare the engine to run straight HPL engine oils without clogging the filter.

If the engine has been deeply neglected, I would personally do two 5k intervals replacing 1 quart of your normal oil with the HPL Engine Cleaner and changing the filter every 5k with the oil, and then on the 3rd OCI run the regular HPL oil of your choice with no mixing. Change filters at 5k to check for carbonaceous material loading, and do periodic in-service used oil analysis to make sure the oil is still serviceable. Once the filter doesn’t show a lot of little carbon chunks, run the HPL OCI as far as the used oil analysis show that the oil still has sufficient viscosity, TBN, low insolubles and oxidation is not in a runaway condition.

That’s the rub with buying hpl, at least for me. I now have a little over a qt with nowhere to use it based off the quantities they sell. I had no issues with the oil, the starting capability at zero degrees was phenomenal. But I probably won’t buy it buy anymore. I have no choice but to mix it somewhere else.

I'd go so far as to suggest picking a specific oil, not just brand, and sticking with it. Mobil 1 Extended Performance or Mobil 1 Truck and SUV have different formulations. I'm not suggesting switching between them will do any harm, but believe you'll get the most benefit sticking with one or the other. Carry-over from one oil to another during oil changes is a real thing.

Last time at Walmart, I picked up four jugs of Mobil 1 Truck and SUV to use in our daughter's 2009 CR-V. No pressure worrying about whether it's in stock for quite some time, as this should be enough for two or more years (shelf life is 5 years unopened).

Mixing HPL with other oils is like mixing a 40 year old scotch with Jack Daniels. Why?

I wouldn't even mix HPL's formulas with other formula's from them, as pointed out, chemistry clash is a thing, and HPL is already a perfect oil that won't be improved by monkeying around with it. Any mixing will just turn a perfect product into a less perfect product. That's my pair of pennies anyway.

Not saying that sticking with a particular brand isn’t a good thing but if switching brands was in any way detrimental I have an 09 that’s had at least 40 oil changes and I can’t remember using the same oil back to back. Still uses not a drop and runs like a clock. My daughter now runs this car 130 miles a day to work and back and drives like she’s being chased by the feds. But I get what you’re saying.

Just use HPL and extend the drain interval. I don't like mixing. It's perfectly fine to do but it's still an unknown blend at the end of the day.
