Old school non pressured cooling system

Sitting in traffic this Monday morning, saw a cylinder with a hose at the bottom. I asked what's this was for, thinking it was a tobacco chew spitter, or the like.

I learned it was a permanent fill "funnel" for the radiator. The driver can fill the radiator while he drives on a as needed basis.

Fascinating.

Yes, those Jeepneys can have all sorts of strange setups. Though the engines tend to be not so ancient Mitsubishis I've found, used in small body on frame trucks. I bet this was done to reduce the cost to build the thing.

A ride in a Jeepney has to be on an Asian traveller's bucket list. I once got on one with cages full of chickens going to market and another rider got on and put a burlap bag (I suspect) with disgruntled snakes nestled next to my leg. Some of my drunken sailor buddies tried surfing on the top while we were moving. Don't think I investigated any cooling system idiosyncracies.

Funny you mentioned the wires on the pole.

In the later afternoon on my ride, I saw a ladder in the middle of the street..the top of the ladder was resting on a pole. Lineman working on the wires.

What struck me most was no orange cone in front of the ladder. Guy was at the top of the ladder. No safety equipment whatsoever. I suspect the lineman was at very high risk to have his ladder hit by a motor vehicle.
