It's oil change time again for the 2012 535i and 2014 x1 28i sdrive. Iv'e been using Total Quartz 9000 energy oil lately so I re-ordered another batch from the same company as I did last year. Last years batch of oil jugs had a 1/17 molded into the bottom of the containers. The batch I just received has 3/8 molded on the bottom of the jug. Could this oil really be from 2008? The jugs from last year have the tamper proof tops, the new batch just has a regular screw on top. Of course, everyone is closed for the long weekend so I can't get an answer on the age of the oil. I'm not putting 12 year old oil in so the oil changes are on hold.

IDK what European specs the Total Quartz oil meets. However, e.g., if the bottles/jugs state SM/GF-4(~2004-'11), then it could be from '08. But, if it states that it's SN/GF-5(along with other BMW & Euro specs), then it's after 2011. And if it's SN+/GF-6, then it's even newer still... But again, IDK if those TQ oils will have the API/ILSAC spec on them???

Thanks Char Baby the response, the label has a 2018 on it along with API service SN/ ACEA A3/B4. The label also has the BMW LL-01, MB 229.5 ,Porsche A40 and VW 502.00/505.00 Approval specs so I assume I'm good to go? The 3/8 on the bottom of the jug was my concern since last batch had 1/17.
Can you post a picture of the jug? I'll tell you if it could be from 2008.

Not sure why but can't see your picture. yes older jugs had a slightly different design...and the stickers were also slightly different, at least here. I used Total Quartz Energy 9000 a lot in various cars, including diesel, as it's very very cheap (here) and good for the price.
Also used the 10W40, 0W30 and 10W50 versions

the mouldings numbers are usually to identify the moulds in case of defects. The label says more about the date

Doesn't look like the latest available here, but I see it's 5 quarts and not 5L, sticker is different too, so I can't help, sorry

Ha, the spout was what made me switch from Shell to Total when I didn't know much about oils, it looked fancier.
Is there a lot code on the sticker on the back of the bottle?
If the date die on the mold is correct that jug was made 4/08. Kind of unbelievable that the jug was made 10 years prior to being filled. I would suspect that the mold may have been made in 08 and the month was the only thing that could be changed as far as the date. I used to work molding car bumpers years ago, some of our molds had date dies in them and some didn't. The ones that did had separate dials for year, month, day, shift. This one just has one dial with an 08 in the center making me think this was probably the year the mold was manufactured.
Thanks gentlemen for all the replies, I'm not using the oil until I call Total oil company on Tuesday for clarification. Luckily, I still had a couple of jugs of Total left over from last year for the wife's 535i, I used Castrol 0w40 in the X1 this go round. At least Castrol put a production date on their oil containers. I will post on Tuesday on what I find out from Total oil company.
Well, I called Total oil in NJ this morning about the oil jug stamped 3/8 on the two 5 qt oil jugs I recently received. According to the Total rep, Total is in the midst of revamping their oil containers and using up all their old containers they have on hand, hence my two 3/8 stamped containers. The rep assured me that even though the containers are old, the oil in the containers are the newer oil formula. Thanks aging for all the replies.
