Old Homelite blower won't stay running

My grandad gave me an old Homelite blower that has not been run in years. I changed the plug, put in fresh fuel. And sprayed out the carb with carb cleaner. It ran great the first time I used it but started acting up the next time. I had a hard time getting it to run on no choke. This unit does not have variable speed. Has the old levers to go to no choke and to shut it off. I tried using it today and for the life of me could not keep it running unless the choke was between half and full choke. Even with that the rpm fluctuated so much it was pretty much useless. I sprayed carb cleaner in the choke while running to see if I could get any other crud out and it would run great for a few seconds.

What do you all think? Do you think some crud was dislodged in the card causing this?

Sounds like there is an issue with the carb not getting enough fuel. Spray the cleaner only burned the cleaner which is why the blower would run nice then start bogging down. Is it a mix? What is the ratio you use?

I would take apart the carb and give it a real cleaning. Also, try running some seafoam in the tank to help clean the lines etc.

Also you may want to check the fuel lines. I've seen a bunch with pin holes in them. Sometime you can't see the break because it is in the tank. All they do is suck air then....

I'm using 40:1 with a small amount of MMO and super unleaded. Mixture works great in weed eater. I bought new fuel lines and will install this weekend, it wouldn't surprise me if the lines in the tank are cracked with as old as the thing is.

Make sure the carburator is tight to the cylinder and not allowing air to be sucked in at that gasketed connection.

Check that the muffler is not clogged internally and that the fuel tank cap vent is working (but your symptoms sounds different than these).

Sounds like a carb problem and that you aren't getting enough fuel. I'd clean it out with carb cleaner. Go to Partstree.com and order a carb kit for it. They cost around $10 and include new gaskets and diaphragms. These carbs have little rubber diaphragms in them to help pump the fuel, and when sitting for awhile they can dry out.

Its a Homelite I would not stick a penny into it in the trash and look for a new one.
