Is it ok to use a larger oil filter on a car. I have an 04 civic with the 1.7 VTEC.

Yes, as long as it fits correctly, has an ADBV if required and a reasonable bypass pressure relief for your application.

As much of a fan I am of "oversize" filters, if my car was under warranty, I'd be leery of using a filter that was not "recommended" by the filter maker. I don't know if they would give you any grief over a possible warranty claim, but it kind of opens the door for them to do so.
Just my $.02.

But where can i get specs for bypass pressure relief on filters, and i dont know what's the bypass relief on my particular engine (1.7L VTEC) Thanks for all the replies in advance

go to wixfilters.com and look up your car. then look for the filter that fits it. That would be the place to start. Should have Bypass settings, filter size, gasket size, etc.

Also, the filter company warranty is only good with the filter they list for your car. Otherwise you have no filter warranty. That said, I usually run oversized on all three vehicles in my care.

Agreed. It depends on your dealer, but most of them are a "Your left front caliper seized because you put on the wrong oil filter!" bunch.

I think it's foolish:

1. There's no accurate correlation between can size and filtration effectiveness. (ex: a small PureOne will have more filtration media then the larger Fram)
2. If the ADB valve happens to gradually empty the filter, it'll take longer for the oil pump to fill it up again resulting in oil starvation.
3. Warrantee issues already mentioned.
4. You run the risk of the larger filter being in harms way. (especially if it's longer becomes a target for road debris)

It is very unlikely that an oil filter will fail and cause engine damage, but:
1) If it is an OEM filter from the dealership, the car company covers the repair costs.
2) If it is an aftermarket filter that is spec'd for that engine, the filter maker covers the repair costs.
3) If it is a filter that is not spec'd for the engine, you cover the repair costs.

Man, you guys are no fun! I've gone so far as to find a filter stud w/ metric threads on one end and standard on the other so I can mount a Ford style filter on my Subaru. Prolly the only Sube in the world with a 3/4x16 threaded filter on it, but isn't that what this board is all about???
