2025 Camry filter size question

Hey everyone, new here, apologies if it's been asked and I did search but couldn't find anything and I was unsure about other results I did find so I figure I'd just ask in a new thread.

I am looking for a slightly larger filter for my new '25 Camry (LE - AWD - 2.5L). Current part number for the CQ Premium (I assume that's a good filter as I've been lurking for a while and noticed it being praised quite often) is 85394. I'd like to get something a little bigger. Current capacity is 4.5 quarts but I don't think I can get it to 5 even with the limited space. Either way, not my main goal, just want something a little bigger and am open to advice and input. This will be the first vehicle I've considered going with a larger filter on.

These filters are made by the same factories that make the Carquest Premium... Fits the 2025 despite the Amazon description.

The recommended 90915-yzzn1 is fine, but if there is room, the 90915-yzzf1 is quite a bit longer. People have been buying the longer version for decades to substitute the shorty. Fram calls it the 4386 size. Purolator still makes the longer size. Oreilly Microgard standard has the taller size. the width is the same.

I think that is the same info I saw on an older reddit post too. Sounds good. I'll give it a shot.

I read good things about the carquest filter so I was trying to use one of those. I dunno, I'm not a filter junkie, I just want something built well.

I have been using Wix/Napa Gold for the longest time but apparently there are some glue issues and the quality has dropped? And I thought the Fram Synthetic Endurance were decent but from what I read it looks like they don't filter very well? I haven't heard anything about Toyota filters but I've owned FORD's in the past and it's like a cult following with Motorcraft products so maybe it's the same thing with Toyota filters? Not trying to start a filter war discussion here, just find decent recommendations so I can make an informed decision. I know I don't "need" the extra size but if I could squeeze that extra .5L out of it that would be cool. I highly doubt that will happen even with the yzzf1 size, maybe .3L or so... and if that's the case I likely won't do it a second time.

You'd be lucky to get an extra 6-8 oz out of a larger filter that would work.

yea that's what I thought. Oh well, thanks everyone for the info on the size difference. Just not enough space on this little Camry ;)

I don't know what has been written so far, but I own a 2025 Toyota with the 2.5 engine. I have been through this already. There are many filters out there that will "fit" your 2025 2.5L Toyota engine. Most of them are wrong for that particular engine, use ONLY what is specified for that particular 2025 Camry, not 2024 or 2023 because they have an old book or it hasn't been updated. Specifically, and only your vehicle. That is my .10 cents worth. Been There Done That!

Toyota generally builds quality vehicles that last . Their engineers seem to know what they are doing so if a larger filter would improve their car and longevity, I am sure that is what would be on it. Follow their recommendations.

I have a 2024 Rav4 with practically the same 2.5L engine. The oil looks pretty clean when I change it at 5K. I don't see a reason for a larger filter if the oil isn't dirty. I used to change the oil on my 4Runner V6 every 5K and filter every 10K. It was a cartridge filter and it always looked clean when I changed it. I think if you have an engine that runs clean, there is no reason to worry about the filter.

On the other hand, my two Chrysler mini vans would turn the oil black as tar. They probably could have benefitted from a better filter (maybe?). I used the recommended filter (various brands) and drove them each for 10 years without any engine trouble.

My Sample size of 1 and all that.

Having run both size filters with the OG Ultras up to 20k miles on my Corolla, I’d end up with a lot of soot in the cans and the VVTI solenoid filter never had a spec of carbon in it. Neither size went into bypass on long runs.

Cutting apart the Frams, the paper filters had about the same amount of media. The Denso’s and ultras had about 15% difference in volume of media which corresponded to the size difference.

The difference in volume is ~4 cu in or 2 ounces.
