I would like to know if any of you using M1 or any other synthetic oil brand use the inexpensive oil filters such as Pureolator instead of the M1 or KN filters? And if so, are they good to go for 5-7K OCI's?

Most will last the same amount of time (nitrile parts excluded). The differences are in the level of filtration. The sensible economics of either a synth or a high end filter depends on how long you're going to keep them in service.

Avoid Fram filters.
Purolator makes about 3 different filters. Purolator, Purolator Premium Plus, Purolator Pure One.
The latter 2 would be fine, also would a Napa Gold (Wix) filter.

I am currently using M1 with a Napa Gold, but wouldn't hesitate to use a Purolator Premium Plus, or Pure One.

With a quality synthetic and a Purolator, I'd go 5k without sweating.

7k? Probably fine but I'll let others who are more knowledgeable chime in.

Probably depends heavily on the year, engine, and how you drive it. (IE: if this is a 1997 supercharged 600+ HP 4.6L V8 Cobra Mustang that is drag raced, 1k is probably a stretch!)

Purolator makes a decent filter. Before I discovered the low prices and great service of site sponsor Fleet Filter who sells NAPA Gold by Wix, Purolator was my brand of choice to use with M1.

What cardboard in your oil?

I believe he's referring to the cardboard endcaps that all of the Fram filters use except the Tough Guard one. That's enough for me to move on to other brands.. I'd rather use a Supertech or STP before a Fram, but thats just me and my opinion.

Personally if you run a syn, one would think that since you ponied up the $$ for syn in the first place, a step up in filtration can't hurt either.

Most of this comes from these oil filter studies where they cut open filters and just look at them. Any oil filter study that simply looks at filters and dismisses the Fram based on a fiberboard endcap is completely stupid. I don't think their opinion is of much value if that is how they are going to evaluate a filter.

If there is a technical reason not to have fiberboard endcap's -- then argue that technical reason. If there is a test that shows fiberboard endcaps don't perform their function as well as metal endcaps, then present the tests you've done to show this. Otherwise, the opinion "I don't like the looks" of the endcaps is completely without merit. To then completely dismiss or disparage a product based simply on the looks of one of the components that you have no technical reason to do so -- is also without merit.

I always use either a Nissan OEM filter or a Mobil 1 filter. I still change every 3000miles/3 months whichever comes first.

I use some cheap filters.... $.01 Purolator Premium Plus after rebate from Pepboys!

I've never used a different filter than usual with syn. Use any quality normal filter you like. :2cents:

mainly my dispute with fram filters is they are cheaply made, yet they cost more then most average filters that are made with more quality.

when i can buy a motorcraft or purolator filter cheaper then a fram, that's what i'm gonna go with, plus the whole startup rattle thing was elimnated when i stopped using fram, that's another thing that'll keep me from buying the orange can.

but i still use their air filters.

I would go with OEM before a fram orange can. I can get Toyota filters for around the same cost as fram.

I had 3 PH8a's on the shelf I had to ditch 2 in the trash. The rubber was covering the 3/4-16 thread on one and the other had no thread.

After reading about twisted brittle broken pleats in the filters forum, I'm not buying inexpensive filters for ANY TYPE of oil. One of the discrepant brands reported is an OEM. Best to upgrade from economy line no matter the brand.

what is the M1 filter you are using? If you want I will send you $5 for the filter and I will run it out to 10K if it fits!
