Ok I have a 91 Eagle Talon...like my forum name

any way i havn't found any real good info on oil for this car nor have i found any good UOA results for cars similar to mine. Im running conventional 10w30 ( Castrol GTX ) right now. im not sure i really like this oil. I just needed something cheap to get by, Im skeptical about running full synthetic in the car as its got a few leaks. and i cant come to spend 4+ bucks a quart on oil. My dad swares by Dello400 15w40 and ususes it in all of the cars we own ( 98 toyota camry 4cl, 98 f-150, 87 acura integra, 87 acura legend, and my personal vw scirocco ) yes it seems kinda funny,my dad beleves that its the worlds best oil. i guess ifyou have had luck with it why change. I personaly like this oil but i don't want to use a 15w40 oil i would rather use a 10w30 or 5w30/40, i have heard that it is better for the turbo on startup. . What do you guys think should i try synthetic or stick with dino....im so confused you have no idea. This site dosn't seem to help me chose ether.

What does the manual call for?? ..a 30 wt or a 40 wt. Personally..I would use an oil like Mobil 1, Redline, Amsoil, "German" Castrol or Royal Purple (These are all "True Synthetics"). Go with the viscsity recommended.

Havoline or Castrol and short OCI sounds like a good choice after reading these 3 oil reports.

Use a good filter though, like WIX or the filter from the dealer.

It's easy to get overwhelmed at this site. There is tons of data, and not really that much guidance on how to find what you need or how to interpret the data. It is that way due to a number of political and technical factors outside the scope of this forum.
Answer some questions so we may better assist you.
How long is your drive to work or school?
What is the lowest temperature you'll see in an average year?
Is that Talon normally aspirated or turbocharged?
You say it leaks. How many miles do you go between adding quarts? 500? 1000? 2000? 3000?
Does it leak when it's parked, or when it's running, or both?

I'll bet a "few leaks" means one quart loss at 1000 miles... or maybe even more.

If that's the case, watch your sales because any name-brand 10w30 will continue to protect if you are losing roughly 66% of the oil capacity at 3000 miles (my guess).

Keep a good filter like Purolator One in it & change the oil/filter every 6K. That would be my methodical remedy.

And...........if you want to keep dad happy, Chevron makes Delo 400 Heavy Duty Engine Oil in 10w30 also. Check the Chevron suppliers in your area. It's available in quarts and gallons.

By the way, Chevron does make great oil, both passenger car and diesel. At this site, it consistently competes for the "top three" brands - in popularity and probably also in quality.

Hey thanks guys for the responses. to answer a few questions, I try my hardest not to drive to campus so usualy I only drive it about once or twice a week depending on what im doing and on ly for a few miles. Usualy on the weekends I will drive about 30-50 miles but it all depends on if im dirving or riding with a friend. so far I have put about 500 miles on the car since i bought it and I really havn't seen a change in the oil level, but I do see a small drip from the area I discribed. I could just be over exagerating the leak. Im not saying that I should use dello400 to make my dad happy....buying the car ****** him off already

Im going to ask about getting the 10w30 dello from a local shop..there cool guys im sure they will help me out. I'll try and keep track of how much I use up in the next few thousand miles...if its not too bad I may try and switch to a synthetic. Oh and the Talon is is turboed but its all stock..no heavy modifications like crazy boost and whatnot.

If you can actually find the 10w30 Delo it is a fine oil. What will it cost?

For your application, a turbo'ed 1991 Mitsu 4 in the mild Northwest climate we enjoy, the much more readilly available 15w40 Delo is, IMHO, every bit as good a choice. You are not normally dealing with sub-zero temps upon start-up. It is in the GI Joe's ad this week for under $1.50 per quart. It is designed for turbo applications including those in much larger diesel engines. It will help clean your motor and keep it clean. It is probably less likely to leak as much as a thinner weight.

Maybe your Dad is smarter than you think? How do his cars run? From the list you made they certainly seem to last...

thanks again...i kinda feel stuped for not looking back at my original post. about the 15w40, I was n't sure about the low temp startup with that oil. the weather has been above freezing for a while now. probably only see 25-25 degree temps at night but rise to 40-60 for the day. so you guys think 15w40 will be fine in my weather climate. I will use it but im was kinda wondering how cold is too cold for a 15w40 oil

Norm ,all I do to find Delo 10w30 oil is go to the local Chevron jobber and buy some , not very hard.

We've had the "how cold is too cold for 15W40" discussion before.

I've got a chart from a Volkswagen manual circa 1988 that indicates a temperatue range of 10 degrees F to 90 degrees F for 15W40.
I would venture that while Volkswagen is far from perfect, if they say 10 F works for 15W40, it will likely in fact work for 15W40.
I'd be inclined to reccomend synthetic for your turbo, even as opposed to the kind of tractor trailer oil we're now discussing, but if it leaks oil and you're not planning on fixing the leak... well, I'd assume it's one of those cars where it just doesn't matter enough for synthetic.

No offence taken. I got a case of dello400 today for 17 bucks. for such and old car and no real idea of how many little oil leaks it has I cant justify spending 3+ a quart on oil. i'll give this conventional oil a try and if I like it cool, if not i'll try something else.

Why isnt everyone here recommending a 20w-50
Any 2 of the above condtions met would be sufficient in IMO to warrant this recommendatiomn.

There isnt a more textbook case of it.
