Oil Usage In My Truck

I have a 2002 Silverado & have been using Mobil 1 5w30 for about the last 50000 miles with oil changes at around 6-7000 miles. At change time I am always about a quart low. Is this normal or something I should be worried about? Is there another synthetic I should be using to help this problem?

Truck has a 4.8liter with about 94000 miles & still runs like a top & doesn't smoke at all!

Seems like low usage for a GM. I would keep it topped up, but that's just me.

That oil change interval sounds fine. 1 quart in 7000 miles is nothing. Some cars can burn a quart every 300 miles later in their life (ahem, Saturns). As long as your truck isn't leaking oil I think you are fine. Check your oil every other fill-up and add a half quart when need be.

Seems to be well within the limits of normal usage between changes.

I'm more of a Ford/Toyota guy so I don't know GM's spec for max oil usage. For some Fords I seem to remember that using a quart every 1,000 (yes one thousand!) miles is acceptable to Ford. (which I think is way too much oil being used, BTW)

Does the owner's manual require 5w30? If so, I'd say your feeding it a good quality steak of a motor oil in the M1.

That's no problem at all. I would not worry about it. GM will tell you that "using" 1 quart per 1,000 miles is "acceptable". If you want add a 1/2 a quart half way through your OCI. That way you'll still be in the "safe" zone for the entire OCI plus you "refreshed" the oil with new additives.

I believe it does recommend the 5w30 & I even had 10w30 put in by mistake once & it through my check engine light for some reason. Had them drain it & put the 5w back in & no light...strange if you ask me!

I wouldnt worry about it. Maybe try some Maxlife and see that helps.
