Just bought a 85 mustang gt 5.0L fox body T5 5 speed T-TOP !everything is original with over 130k miles, its the last years of the carb 5.0L, it look great and everything is stock and original, that is why I pay a little more , cause most I seen is already strip down and turn into race car.

anyway the car is smoke a little bit cause the carb need to be retune.. engine and drive train is good and strong. with this many miles, what oil weight should I use. I was thinking about max life since mustang love valvoline. dont know what weight. and T5 5 speed transmission take dex/mercon right ? I was thinking Valvoline dex/mer.. and rear end I think its 7.5 not the 8.8, mabe it take 80w90 with LSD additive ? I was thinking durablend 80w90 with ford lsd ? or I dont know its LSD rear end or not, oil filter is no brainer, Motorcraft.. any other suggession .

I know what yall think, down here most shop can take care all these maintaince, but I hate going in with stock car and they alway suggest , take out the motor and build a stroke motor and mod this mod that.. that is not what I am plan on doing. Since all those year I been maintaince my other ride, I know a bit about maintaince these cars, just need get a correct fluid. Any suggession is welcome.

If you are cheap, run an HDEO 10w30. If you aren't cheap, run Mobil 1 0w-40, it is my go-to oil for the SBF's.

10w-30 maxlife. Also, go to the junkyard and grab a set of GT40P heads off of a 96? to 2000 explorer. They are cheap great flowing heads. Grab a decent intake like an Edelbrock RPM or Weiend stealth, and grab a Holley street fighter (I think thayts what they are called ) 670 carb, easy to tune..

Throw some gears in there, get some headers and exhaust, and have a blast. nice choice!

96 and early 97 had the GT40 heads, later on 97 up to 2001 had the GT40P heads.

Thanks for suggess, but I dont want that [censored], I want keep it 100% original as possible. if I want go fast, I alway had my LS1 cammed camaro for that.

Back in the day,I used Mobil 1 5w30 synthetic in my 85 Mustang GT.

I had alotta fun in that car!

You might want to analyze it and see how much fuel is getting in. I'd probably go with cheap 15w40.

Have you considered TGMO ?

Ford have tested 5W-20 for a trillion miles (and you have a ford),and TGMO has a better VI...

Actually, given that the carb is getting on, maybe Delo 400 would be a good idea.

Bahahaha. Funny you mention that. I had 2 quarts Mobil 1 5w-20,2 Pennzoil Platinum 0w20 and a quart of tgmo so I figured I'd test it in my 88 5.0.
Its noticeably peppier off the line. I lost 3 psi at hot idle and nothing measurable while driving.
Ford could have back-spec'd the old 5.0's if the miles were low enough. I've got 4000kms on the oil now and its half a quart low. And blacker than road tar.
I was using royal purple 10w30 API SN and the engine ran smooth as silk, very quiet. However it looks like I'm gonna have to start eating some crow here because my fankenbrew 20 grade mix hasn't contributed to any added engine noise,so it seems as though Mobil has got er figured out with the SN spec stuff. And the other 3 quarts were 0w-20s,but no extra noise at all.
Anyways I wouldn't,and don't run any thicker that a 30 grade. 10w30 is ideal for summer,0w-30 in the winter.
That guy with the 650000 original mile 6er runs 10w30 in his,all year round,in Michigan, and he hasn't had to open that motor yet.

I had the privilege of driving that model year for 2 weeks. It was a convertible and the performance was great. The days of the V8 live on in my mind. No whiny muffler the kids use today,,well that was yesterdayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy

Congrats!!! Post a picture of the car.

Lets start with the basics - what does the owner's manual and/or the FSM say and recommend for the fluids you mentioned?

You realize that that vehicle put out 210hp if lucky that year, and 175hp the year before (and in CA), right?

Not saying it is a bad car - always wanted one... But cars today are putting out that kind of HP from 4-cyl engines.

This.

Also...gas was much less back than. Cars are much more efficient and powerful. Although very little can match that rumble!! Only makes me hate gas prices!

A peaky modern 4cyl is not anything like driving a torquey traditional V8, even when the peak hp ratings are similar. They do a good job, but they aren't at all the same.

I`ve driven some of the modern smaller engine cars that claim to have tons of hp. BUT,I just don`t feel it. The old school V8`s,even though not having near as much hp on paper, just seem to have more *real* hp.

Why do people always ASSume that carbureted engines are drenching the lube oil with fuel, and that just because they have low SAE net horsepower ratings they're not fun to drive? The WAY power is delivered matters, and there's not much that's more fun than an 80s 5.0 Mustang... 210 horsepower or not.

I've posted oil analyses of my '66 carbureted 440 that show the same off-the-chart low fuel dilution that EFI engines show. If this 5.0 is "smoking" (black, presumably) then it has a problem that needs fixing... but once that's done and the carb is dialed in right its not going to saturate the oil with fuel.

My '69 R/T is rated at 275 gross (translates to maybe 230 net on a good day, probably less). My 12 SRT is rated at 470 net, and by modern standards has a HUGE engine that's a torque monster... but the old 69 big-block will still snap your neck as hard or harder than the modern Hemi, even if it loses a hundred yards or so further down the road.

It's the ~300lb-ft of torque it made that makes it fun. My old '87, when stock, would obliterate the tires if you looked at it wrong, LOL!

Bingo and because it's a V8 instead of a half motor, there are twice the cylinders firing and at low speed the difference is clearly felt...

Once at 5K RPM when the 4cyl is singing and the stock 5.0 power curve is falling, the half motor may have a advantage but the V8 will be gone by then...
