Suggested oil for supercharged 5.0L

I'd also install or upgrade to a decent oil pressure gauge to see where you're at in terms of operational viscosity.
I'm also sure you'd be more than fine with the cheaper and readily available Mobil 1 0W-40 which would be lighter on start-up.


+1 & I like the oil pressure gauge suggestion also.

Yes, but the difference to the OP's problem is the Cobra has an Eaton supercharger with a separate oil system. The lube in an Eaton supercharger is super-ultra-double-secret-special stuff! Also, the Eaton supercharger impellers max out at about 12,000 rpm. The rotor in a Vortech goes to 30,000 or more.
 
Edelbrock performer rpm lower, Cobra upper intake. Upper is ported, and lower is slightly ported to match the work done on the gt40x heads. T/b is a 70mm BBK. Air comes in from an Anderson Power pipe.

Thanks again for all the information. When it comes out of the garage this upcoming March, im going to go with Pennzoil Ultra 5w40.

Next question. What exactly is oil shearing? I'm going to assume its oil breakdown due to friction, and the heat caused by it. Am I correct? I should probably read more about this stuff. Next search is this TBN jibberish

That does NOT sound right (the intake). The Cobra intake is tubular, the Edelbrock is not.

I ran a TFS-R with a BBK 75mm on my GT40's. I bought an Anderson pipe as well (love them!) but never got around to using it

Oh shearing is exactly what it sounds like: oil being worked between two surfaces which shear it.

No sir, they would not. It's funny because as I mentioned before, i had everything written down for the engine builder. I said I want this, this and this. He said, no you want this, this and you will be satisfied. Truth is, I am. The guy saved me a ton of money on parts, and the results are great. Once I get back to the garage, ill get under there and really find out what was used. Ill snap a few pictures too.

Shearing is what occurs when oil is trapped between two surfaces that are moving at high relative velocities. This is what happens in bearings and gears in a running engine. The combination of relative motion, compressive loading, and high temperature causes oil to lose viscosity. If an oil loses enough viscosity, metal-to-metal contact can occur, and wear is the result. As a general rule, oils that have a wide spread between low and high temp viscosity ratings are more prone to losing viscosity due to shearing. This is because the polymers that are added to get the wide viscosity range break down under high mechanical stress and heat.

Castrol GTX is not the oil it used to be as shown by the PQIA VOA's. If you are looking for a cheap and cost effective 20w50 that is loaded with enough zddp, look at the 20w50 Kendall GT1. Well all around GTX is not as good as other oils that cost less. Just look at the PQIA tests on the new SN oils. Castrol GTX and Valvoline conventional had some of the lowest TBN as well. BP has generally cheapened up their oil line IMHO. And back in the day, all I ran was GTX. If he is going to run conventional, around here GTX is more expensive than most brands. He may just as well run something with a better additive package that costs less. The Kendall here is 3 bucks a quart, GTX is over 4.50.


I am all about price point. I would buy the Kendall if GTX was that expensive here. I pay $26 for 10 quarts and get a $7 rebate...total price = $1.90 per quart.
