Oil storage - winter

Hey oil gurus

I keep my oil storage outside right now, should I bring it in during the winter - I have about 2+ years of oil stocked -

Is there any reason to bring it inside?

I like to keep mine in the basement vs the garage where its 110 to -10F but thats mildly ocd. of course I may end up storing some of this for 3-4 years.

There have been reports on this site of variable temps splitting oil jugs. Keep it where the temps are stable, above 50F at least.

I couldn't imagine the hassle in cleaning up 5 litres of engine oil, and the loss of oil that you could have used would defeat the purpose of stashing.

Walmart prices are pretty cheap... If you can't stash easily I wouldn't keep this stuff around.

I have 2 years worth and that is only 4 oil changes. If you have 2-3 oil changes you can always bargain shop for the next OCI worth so you don't have to pay full price.

I would not worry. The only problem I could see is if you picked up a jug when it was below zero and the plastic might crack. If you don't touch it then its fine.

The only issue is if you build a fort of cardboard cases several high. The oil will sweat condensation from temp extremes and the cardboard could get soaked and fail.

I've always kept mine in the garage all these years. It gets pretty warm in Florida but the oil and jugs keep tp hold up just fine of course the oldest jugs I have are SM which can't be more then 4-5 years old at the most. I also try to use up the thin bottles first to get those outta the way.

used oil analysis show the oil is fine too.

I've got 5-6 cases of Amsoil stacked up pretty high and everything has been fine for the past several years. I dip up the bottom box every so often because the transmission fluid is down there and all is well. Boxes seem strong and healthy.

You've got to have some old crusty boxes / oil in order for them to fail like that.

Ambients here vary from below zero F to over 100F.
I leave my oil in the garage and have never had an issue with either the jugs or quarts splitting nor the performance of the oil.

I've stored oil in the garage and in the basement, never a problem associated with either place. I shake them up, and pour them in, no problems. I would imagine if you dropped a cold bottle of oil it could crack, but I have no first hand experience in doing that.
