Not a lot of replies in power sports forum and this more applies to passenger oil anyway. I am thinking of changing my polaris ranger over to a non UTV/ATV specific full synthetic oil either Castrol Edge 5w50 or Amsoil signature 5w50. The big issue with polaris is fuel dilution and oil shearing. How do I know which of the two is better suited for me? I was leaning towards the castrol edge since I have read it has higher levels of ZDDP and is recommended for classic car which the ranger is flat tappet cam. I currently use Amsoil UTV 5w50 but it is designed for use with wet clutches and the ranger does not have one. Thanks for the help

Not sure if it fits your budget, but HPL has some Polaris-targeted oils. A 5w50 engine oil, a transmission-specific fluid, and a diff fluid. I forget the exact product line names, but I picked up a case from HPL awhile back that contains 2 full fluid changes for the entire vehicle.

You can call Mary Jane @ (815) 932-3288 if you want to buy, or ask @HPL Plant Manager for additional details, as I think this is one of the product lines they’re still adding to their site.

Being designed for wet clutches doesn't hurt.

The "5w ..." may be important to him; he is in Michigan and cold starts are certainly a concern, so a 15w or 20w may not be appropriate.

He's looking for the best boutique oil. He's using Amsoil 5w-50, and he has said nothing about what has been wrong with that. Then he was considering Amailie. Now it's Castrol Edge ... This is just another unicorn search. Here's his other thread:

OP -
The only way to know which is better is to do a bunch of expensive UOA testing; something you're not likely to do.
As I said in your other thread, select a lube with a high HTHS value.
So just pick one and be OK with your choice.

Not looking for the best boutique oil at all. 5w50 is the rated oil for polaris.

I asked about castrol edge in my original post on the powersports forum aswell. I did not bring up the amalie oil here because I am not asking about the "boutique atv oils" here just if anybody has done testing on castrol edge or amsoil 5w50 passenger car oil.

I never said there was anything wrong with Amsoil Polairs oil. But since polaris are known for fuel dilution I want to change oil more often and not sure which way to go with oil.

Not really a unicorn search at all I am only asking if anybody has done any testing or opinions on 2 oils that really do exist. Isn't that the point of this forum to get help from other people so maybe I don't have to spend $50 on a test because somebody else already has.

I have done UOA on vehicles but since this polaris only gets 1 maybe 2 oil changes a year I don't want to waste years of my life waiting to do one. I just opened my last bottle of amsoil polaris "boutique" oil and need to buy a case of some 5w50 for a oil change in a month or two.
