Oil selection for my 2010 VW Tiguan 2.0T TSI

Be careful with the RP on your 2.0T. Not recommended or approved by anybody Audi!!!

It breaks down quicker than M1 or Syntech. google it.

Motul x-cess 8100 has great detergents that can help with the design flaw of that engine.

I gotcha. It's going in as a sort of "break-in flush" for 3 months before the GC. I really have little faith in any oils other than the Euros, like the Motul ester you mentioned. That's why I'm doing all my oil changes at 3000-5000 miles (4 months). (these are all oils I have on-hand, btw)

I may pull a UOA from the 1st run of GC to get a baseline. After that, if it looks good, then I will feel better about other oils. If the GC run looks funny, then I really have to wonder.

I definately have some studying to do.

Thanks everyone.

I found a RP 15w-40 UOA!

Decent TBN, very high Zink, Phos and Ca. Visc stayed high.

AJ, you bet a Tig would replace a Sienna. But, the Sienna has been paid for since the day I bought it (used in 2001). One income, a wife and three kids - and a Tig - are mutually exclusive (for me).

With the history of this engine...I would get a synthetic oil change and filter...done at the dealer every 5,000 miles whether it needs it or not.

So what's the design issue with this engine? Are detergents the answer or oxidation resistance?

Redline probably isn't on VWs list - but their ester base would seem to be fairly attractive for any abusive engine (if hot spots are the issue). (?)

I just read the 7 page thread on the Import Oil forum. My head is mush. The intake deposits are an evil menace that nothing can combat. Partly fuel, partly PCV, partly EGR, partly VVT. Hopefully the latest version of the engine offers some relief.

I've asked that question, both here and on vwvortex, and the general consensus is, that it's not likely that the new design alleviates the problems. Alas, these engines are probably too new to draw final conclusions.

I'm itching for a GTI myself... maybe in a few years.

That iron level, at 12k, wouldn't cause me too much alarm. And actually should cause no alarm - but we all have our emotions to deal with.

If the intake valve is the achilles heel - then you can't choose an oil on wear alone. That 0w10 may be giving great wear #s, meanwhile your intake valve is cruding up due to evaporation products in the case.

I was actually thinking 15w-40 changed every 3-5k, but I already have my heavy synth oil.

Found it - lava on the autobahn - perhaps another reason for Euro specs -

quote from video - "..conditions you might see on the autobahn.."

Would that make a too-thin of an oil coke up and cause sludge/varnish in a hot running engine (turbo, supercharged)?

First off i did not realize it was a 2010, i just looked at the 2.0T and jumped to conclusions. I also know that you have this oil already and just using it up.
I never said RP was not good, I just do not here and read any good things about it on turboed cars, especially the 2.0T Audi/VW.
I also used it for 3 oil changes and it burned off more than any i have ever used.
The PCV/fuel sludge and gunk in the older engines was corrected in this engine i believe. And it is also to early to tell.

Check out these pics.

I say do what you plan on doing and guaranteed no issues on this area, maybe not the electrical stuff though, lol.

I have a new 2.0 TSI as well and I have three, free, 10k dealer service intervals as well. I have decided to change the oil at 5k, 15k and 25k....in between the dealer services. I am using GC. I will stick with 502 certified oil through the warrantee time.

Couple of things I have learned with my two, local VW dealers......

1. They will be using Castrol 5w40 and will not substitute GC. Both service managers told me that GC is not the recommended oil, being that it is a 0w30. The manual calls for 5w40, 502 approved.

2. $38 for a filter....you are getting robbed. I just paid $19 for a filter at my dealer. I have not been able to find an after market yet.

3. Both the VW service managers agree with me.....10k OCI's is nuts....but they both said it will give them more business down the road. 5k for me.

I hear you on the 0w-30 thing. I did not get into the substitute thing with them yet.GC makes the 3.5cP HT/HS, so the visc itself is really a non-issue. I would like to use GC, I do a lot of short trip driving now. I hate to drain their oil out, but maybe I can save it for use in some other vehicle.

I guess another contradiction in the GC thing is that the 504/507 oils are 30 weights themselves.
