Oil schedule for my new Sonata

I bought a 2011 Sonata. I don't guess it needs any special oil. I'm still on the factory fill. Any qualms with running the factory fill to about 5000 miles? The manual recommends 7500 mile oil changes for regular duty and apparently they have some kinda of marketing agreement with Quaker State.

Any particular oil Hyundais "thrive" on?

I'd like to get away with changing the oil twice a year.


How about filters? I presume Hyundai makes a good OEM.

You could change twice a year on Quaker State Ultimate Durability. How many miles do you drive? What kind of miles are they ie. city/highway %, when you post a question like that you need to give more info if you want to have a more accurate answer. In Texas, I don't think two OCI's per year is out of reach in your Sonata by any means. UseQuaker State Ultimate Durability or PP or any of your fave "syns". Make sure you change the air filter at the recommended intervals if dusty dry conditions persist!

If it was me, I'd go 1000-1500 on the factory fill and then switch to any decent synthetic oil in the recommended viscosity. Then I'd just stick to the factory recommended oil change interval (7500 miles in your case) while it's under warranty.

Here's the service manual comment regarding oil:

Selection Of Engine Oil
Recommendation : 5w30 ACEA A5 (If not available, refer to the recommended API or ILSAC classification
API classification: SL or SM above
ILSAC classification : GF3, GF4 or above
ACEA Classification : A3 or A5
SAE viscosity grade : Refer to the recommended SAE viscosity number

Based on this, I'd select a synthetic 5w30 that meets ACEA A5 AND carries the Honda HTO-06 approval. I'd personally use Pennzoil Platinum or Ultra synthetic and OEM oil filters.

7500 for regular service. How many for "severe service"?
That issue would determine my choice of oil and interval.

Most of my driving is short trips to work, which are less than 10 miles. For severe service, the manual recommends 3750 mile OCIs.

Very well, I'll change at 1500 miles.

Stick to the Severe Service schedule. I pretty much guarantee you are severe service- darn near everyone is.

Keep you receipts for all service and maintenance work- Hyundai will refuse to honor the powertrain warranty if service records are not both timely and available for inspection if asked for. Do a search for Hyundai consumer complaints- you will see what I mean.

Congrats on the new car! We are on our first two Hyundais- and they won't be our last. I hope your experience mirrors ours.

I don't like the notion that most people are on severe service but you're definitely on severe service!
