Pennz Ultra volatility

I am using PU, for the first time in a 2011 Hyundai Sonata 2.4 NA. I am planning to run a 7500 change, as an upcoming trip will put about 2000 miles on in a week. With about 4K on the oil I have twice had to add about 6 oz. Haven't had any useage with previous oils (factory, MC, G-oil, Pennzoil conventional). Is usage more common with the PU, especially after it's done some cleaning and has started to darken?

I use PU in my 2006 Honda Odyssey. Its driven only on long trips, 100+ miles. I do 7500 (OLM) oil changes. As far as I can tell, PU does not consume much if any. I never have to add any. The van has almost 80K miles now.

When switching oils, consumption sometimes fluctuates for the first change interval. I wouldn't worry about it.

If anything, slight consumption is good -- it means you will be able to replenish the add pack when topping off.

I've seen a few threads mentioning oil usage with Pennzoil Ultra. Take it for what it's worth. The SOP fans will say it is cleaning something up. However, I don't really buy into that (depending on the previous oil used). Does one really think that PU, M1, Amsoil...etc really clean "that" much better than the others; I don't.

OTOH, you look like you've been using conventional oil; so, I suppose it is possible the PU is having to clean depsoits. Especially, since you list Pennzoil conventional...yuck!

You didn't have to add anything. You chose to. Should wait till your down 1/2 qt to add oil anyways. On extended intervals you get more replenishment. Add less measuring mistakes, less mess.

Agree with others this should go away in a couple PU oil changes.

+1 on switching to Ultra burns a little. I had a Honda Passport that I switched over to Penn HM and it burned a qrt every few weeks for the first 3-4 oil changes then it leveled for to a 1/2 qrt every 3-4k miles.

No one knows the true NOACK for Ultra because Pennzoil keeps playing games with their PDS's.

No Ultra consumption issues here, but Ultra's GTL base stock differs from most other mass-market synthetics. Maybe this base stock is more prone to consumption in certain situations, but 12 ounces in 4,000 miles hardly qualifies as consumption at all.

Pennzoil does keep mucking around with the PDSs on their US website, occasionally posting the "SM" version. But is one looks at Shell's "electronic product catalog" (epc.shell.com), the correct and consistent SN PDS is available, which shows volatility in the 5-6% range.
