Hey, new to the forums here. I discovered this forum several days ago and have been lurking since then and found a wealth of information on here, so I decided to join and get some information for my vehicle more specifically.
I've got a 98 Volvo s70 with the 2.5 non-turbo with 132,xxx miles on it and I live in south Georgia where summer lasts 9 months out of the year and this time of year is really hot and humid. I do a lot of stop and go driving now. Work is about 3 miles away and I have to go through 9 red lights and a stop sign to get there.
As with most people I've been pretty ignorant about motor oils and their many additives. Around 100k my rear main seal began to leak oil pretty badly and I was still a bit of an idiot teenager back then, and wasn't used to owning a car that leaked oil. I used to do a lot of highway driving, driving from Atlanta, where I'm from, down to Valdosta which is almost Florida. It's about a 500mile round trip and I'd make it several times a month to see, my now, fiance going to school there.
Long story short I used to make the drives without taking a break and by the time I got off the exit I would notice quite loud valve tick. This happened on more than one occasion (remember the idiot teenager part I mentioned earlier) and I'm sure this occurrence caused what's probably permanent engine damage some where. I've never had the money to fix the rear main seal as most people know, for FWD vehicles it's really expensive to replace a 13 dollar seal.
So I've tried several additives to get rid of the constant rough idle the car has now. Up until recently I've found out that most of these oil additives are absolute [censored] for you engine. Recently I used a quart of Lucus oil stabilizer and it seems to have stopped the leaking, and before I use the Restore USA Engine Restore(stuff in a silver can, looks like fabric softener). The Engine Restore smoothed my engine out amazingly and got rid of the rough idle, but it only lasts about a week or so, I imagine before until most of it leaked out or it just stopped working.
So, after all this, I'm pretty sure I will be lucky to make it to 200k. I just changed my oil to get that Lucas out, as I've heard a lot of mixed feelings and just put Mobil 1 HM 10w-40. Volvo calls for a synthetic 10w-30 in the service manual.
So, my question for yall is, are their any better recommendations for oil out there? I'm going to see how this 10-40 works for me, but I know the rough idle is still there. Should I just stop worrying about trying to get rid of it, or cover it up rather and just keep using a quality oil? Or is there something I can use to help out? I'm also going to buy a can of Lubrimoly as I've heard good things about it here on the forums.
Sorry for the novel.
