Just got a 460 built for my 77 F-100 and it gets installed this week. Engine shop recommends Maxima Premium 20/50 or equivalent in Joe Gibbs/Lucas. The shop is in Yuma AZ so they are on the warmer end. Also the shop does a lot of work for jet boat applications.

I was running HDEO 15w40 in the previous engine. I'm not going to penny pinch on engine oil after spending five figures on the new engine. But I wanted to run it by the collective expertise on here to see what you all recommend.

You didn't mention where you live, what the use case is for the truck or what your intended OCI is.

Bostick Racing Engines is a reputable shop. They do a lot of work for David Freiburger

It looks like it's a decent bit warmed over and a solid pump gas motor. I think a lot of members here will suggest a 0w- or 5w-40 Euro oil and you'll probably get some VR1 20w-50 recommendations. You could do Driven GP1 20w-50, and if Bostick recommends Maxxima and Lucas then there is definitely some knowledge there.

@Pablo could also get you squared away with some Amsoil recommendations.

Your mains and rod clearances are modestly looser than stock but not excessively so. I think you could run a 40w oil and be totally fine. Probably even a 30w. With your roller cam, you don't need a high ZDDP oil, and I would be comfortable with just about any top shelf synthetic. During the warranty definitely run what the builder asks you to, though.

Thanks for the pointers. I live in Oklahoma (Altus AFB) and drive it occasionally, think 1 to 2k miles/yr. Both cold and hot extremes, although single digits to 105 isn't really that bad for a modern oil.

I'll have to develop a time-based OCI as I'll never hit mileage. In the past I changed the oil every couple years but that is definitely going to change now that I've put so much $$ into the engine.

The Freiburger/Finnegan connection is how I found the shop. Thanks for the info!
