Hello

I am looking for a High additive package OFF THE SHELF affordable oil.

Currently I am running Mobil 1 15w50 "racing oil" and I havent had any issues......but its tooo darn thick and I dont run 300f oil. I fell Im giving up power and creating too much friction with that syrup oil. I generally make runs at 160---170F water temp....its quarter mile shots with plenty of cool off time.

I would like a 5-30 high zinc oil.....

I do see that Rotella t6 5w40 and that looks really good to me...../good package and reasonbly priced /off the shelf.

Engine is a 427 Ford windsor style block...(DART Block) Eagle steel rotating assembly. clearances are 27-30 thousanths on rods and mains.

I am running a Solid roller camshaft with pressure fed lifters. I Run a Stock style oil pump (no high volume) its a mild build....12 to 1.....686hp on the dyno.

My Goals ARE: further reduce internal friction.
Maintain a High protection additive package
Keep costs realistic......with an off the shelf oil.
I dont run the car alot.......but when I do, I push it Hard.....shifting 7600rpm.

thanks for your time.....and thoughts. Ill Let this cook a little.

I think you mean 0.0027 to 0.003 bearing clearance.

The 15W-50 is probably the correct choice if oil temp is adequate. Rotella T6 is also a robust choice, but I believe the current formulation is not as robust as in the past.

Just about any conventional engine making over 70HP per cylinder is in need of significant oil film thickness/strength. No amount of oil pressure will compensate for those kinds of loads.

You are a great candidate for a boutique oil, think a lower viscosity with a high HTHS. I would not risk an expensive engine on today's "dumb'd down" oils.

Just an FYI, Mobil 1 MX4t (racing 4t) motorcycle oil is available at WalMart and is a very robust product.

man..i tell ya.... this and rotella t6 5w40 looks interesting. LOOK at the zinc in video....same as 15/50

yes on bearing clearance......right around 3 thou...

I run 0W40 in my Ilmor 710/ 700HP V10 viper engine in my 30ft v hull.

It runs out of steam at 5900 - can spin to 6300.

2nd time I see comp cams break in oil.......WOW.

LUCAS!!!!!!!!

thanks for that chart!

427 windsor. dart block. eagle crank-rods. jesel rockers. morel lifters. afr cnc heads. made a honest 686 on the dyno.

Richard Maskin’s DART blocks are very good pieces. He would have recommend 5w30 for your application. He would always lean towards thinner oil. We had a good relationship with Richard and he is greatly missed.

If you are looking for something off the shelf, just run Mobil 1 FS 0W40.

I also was a Big Fan Of Maskin. I used to watch his tech seminars on you tube. He was well spoken and extremely bright. My engine machinist (my good friend) also had high regard for him. Those Blocks......Game Changer for Us Ford guys.

Thank you for your Honest recommendation for me. Seems like an excellent one!

I have always been a little bit leary of some of my oil decisions......and while I do like what I SEE in diesel oil analysis.....I dont see what the oil is foaming [email protected] I would hope there is a like better anti foaming with a higher rpm gas oil.

I originally put this engine together around 8-10 years ago.....and I did contact Mobil for a recomendation....and I did get the 15w50 mobil 1. I just dont like that heavy syrup....and I dont run long high rpm events. I always worry about the oil pump driveshaft and the strain on the distributor gear. Its a drag car that i run on the street. I live 7 miles from Atco ....and I run it around in a small radius from time to time.

RIP. One of the Great Ones.

Until a few years ago, Richard was the only person who has been a speaker at every PRI trade show. At these events I used to chuckle because other meeting rooms were not that crowded while his room had a mushroom cap shaped crowd in the hallway looking into the room that was 100% full.

This is Richard working on one of my V8 bike engines.

This is the engine before the chrome pan and carbon fiber valve covers went on.

Weight is an issue on a motorcycle. Replacing the cast valve covers with carbon fiber saved 7 pounds and removing the stand gets this thing just under 300 pounds. This is an all aluminum 421 making 600 Horsepower

And the end result is fantastic.
