So i just purchased a 2005 Ford GT and factory recommendation is the Motorcraft full synthetic 5w-50 which i guess they also use in the Boss and their other 5.4 supercharged engines. The problem is that i have read a few stories that the company due to emissions removed the ZDDP and now what it available is not so great per say and shears down to 40 and 30 weight oil after 1k and 2k miles respectively.

So I am trying to think of either another 0w-50 or 5w50 that may be suitable. My choices are either Amsoil 5w-50 which i think Amsoil now states that it meets Fords requirements, Redline 5w-50 but i hear it is way too thick for this type of engine, M1 either 0w-50 or 5w-50 but some say it is too thin lol. Would love to hear solid inputs from everyone.

BTW, the car has straight pipes with no catalytic converters so if the only reason the M1 Racing 0w-50 is advertised as "off road" or "track" is so because of the high additives that can foul the cats that is not a concern for this particular car.

First off, jealous. Second off, I wouldn't hesitate to use M1 0W50 / 5W50 in that. The new GT calls for Castrol Edge Supercar 5W50.

Off Topic, I think I have seen your exact car in some youtube videos. It has the Borla rear exit headers right? If so it sounds absolutely amazing.

Thank you. Its not mine. I literally picked up the car yesterday and it is 100% stock. Getting dropped off this weekend for a pulley, tune, and catless straight custom exhaust. It will definitely be nasty and should put down 650whp.

The new Ford GT is a V6TT which is a completely different engine compared to the V8 5.4 so not sure if the Castrol Edge meets the Ford specifications for the Ford GT which i think is the WSS-M2C931-C

Ford knows the oil will shear, that's why they spec it thicker so it's in the proper range during the full interval.

You are right about Redline 5w50 it's really thick at 5.0 HTHSV, the 0w40 would be a better choice at a 4.0 HTHSV. Redline has a higher HTHSV because of the synthetic base oils they use when compared to the group 3 oils of the same sae viscosity

I was going to say the same if looking for a off the shelf easy to find oil. I see you are in FL so the 15 part is not a problem and the 50 will meet the OE 50 spec.

The Edge does. The hard part is getting it. I would imagine the loads the Ecoboost places in oil would be equal to or greater than your 5.4L.

Absolutely beautiful car, very jealous. That is a car I would buy without question if I struck it big.

The Redline 10w40 is in the middle at about 4.4 cSt HTHSV, and should be fine in your climate.

If you're worried about warranty id stick with something in the correct grade like Amsoil 5w50

Who is warrantying 12 year old cars these days? Even if it was, considering that he said he is getting a pulley, tune and exhaust this weekend, me thinks a warranty isn't a concern of his.

M1 15w50 right off the shelf and call it a day. In Florida with the boost turned up? Absolutely my choice.

These cars have not been made in over 10 years now.

Certain API specs impose a limit on zinc and phosphorus content for some grades (xw-20 and xw-30 IIRC). That just means ZDDP content is capped, not eliminated. The cap doesn't even necessarily mean the oil has less ZDDP than it'd otherwise have. And even if it did, given modern oil technology (e.g. better forms of ZDDP), that wouldn't necessarily mean performance would be reduced. Those same API specs are actually STRICTER on wear control than the ones that had higher limits for ZDDP. And again, this probably doesn't even apply to xw-50 grades in the first place.

So, yeah. Whatever you meant by this, I wouldn't worry about it.

Unlikely except in extreme circumstances (e.g. lots of fuel dilution and/or track use), and unrelated to ZDDP in any case. Either way, this isn't enough to outweigh the fact that the oil is explicitly approved for this car.

Yes. Ford doesn't say either way AFAIK, but Amsoil apparently is willing to stand by this 100%.

Maybe. Depends how and where you drive it.

Hogwash.

That's part of it. But mainly, "race" oils are optimized for race engines that get frequent oil changes and teardowns. Different requirements from a street-driven car that needs to go a few thousand miles between changes and isn't gonna get ripped apart every other week.

This is an all roller cam engine. Why are you worried about ZDDP... You can prolly live quite comfortably at 800 PPM. But ...

Write a letter to Ford Motorsports and ask what they recommend. Not Ford Corporate... Tell them the car will be tracked on occasion. Get it in writing.

Then write a letter to Saleen and ask the exact same questions. Get that in writing and then come back and discuss.

These are not stock daily driver motors. Both Ford Moorsports and Saleen have thousands of hours of track time with motors of this ilk at this HP rating. They know what lives and what does not. I would not be surprised to see them say Castrol RS10W-60 or something.

I would definitely not use anything that is not on Porsche's A-40 list.

That engine bites the dust and you will be out $25K for a full house rebuild. Why are you even discussing this with amateurs ...

Wow, that's hot. I just picked up an NSX last week and felt pretty cool, but... I am not sure I'm cool anymore...
