Hello all, looking for a recommendation for my 2007 Honda fit.

About the car: 2007 Honda fit with
1.5 liters in-line 4 front engine with 73.0 mm bore, 89.4 mm stroke, 10.4 compression ratio, overhead cam, variable valve timing/camshaft and four valves per cylinder. It sees a lot of short trips (about 5 minutes per trip) each day of the week, and highway 2 hour, once a week. Owners manual recommends 5w-20.

Car has 80 000km (48 000miles) on it now, I have used dyno Castrol GTX 5w-20 oil and Fram filter every 5000km (3000miles) until 75000km(45 000miles), from 75000km(45 000miles) to now, I have used Pennzoil Conventional 5w30.

Also, I live in Ottawa Ontario, so it will experience some very cold days for the next few months. Winter temps usually in the 20's or below.

So what would be a good oil for me? I was leaning towards synthetics because of all the short trips I do, But is the cheapest dyno oil that is available on the shelf good enough if I change it every 5000km (3000miles)?

The Castrol GTX seemed to expensive for nothing, thats why I switched over to Pennzoil conventional, but I accidently bought 5w30 by mistake and putted it in the car, should I continue using 5w30 or go back to 5w-20..

Thanks for the help.

5w30 won't hurt anyhing. I would strongly consider using Honda's own 0w20 synthetic; it is an outstanding oil and priced very well. Should let you run out to 5,000 miles easily, probably further.

Hello, fellow 'Ottawan'!

Canadian Tire now sells Mobil 1 'AFE' 0W-20. That would work really, really well in the upcoming winter. Run it for about 12,000km (7500 miles), or for the winter (ie., change it in the spring)

Not that it matters for the sake of your question, but wow that engine is quite undersquare!

I own a 07 fit as well.

I used from Motorcraft 5W20 to (tried but didn't like it) Syntec 0W30 and now I'm using Pennzoil Conventional or Quaker State 5w20, doing oil changes per OLM (typically 20~30% life left).

I personally do not see the need for going too exotic, but wouldn't stop you from using full sync 0W20 or 5W20 for better cold starts.

make sure you have your engine block heater plugged in for winters (to save wear and tear).

+2 for the Honda oil and at 5 bucks/L hard to beat.

But I would actually give a preference to the Toyota 0W-20. About the same price and also comes in a 5L just for $25.
The Toyota oil is lighter than the Honda product so it will have an advantage getting through those Ottawa winters.

Just so you know, the '07 Fit's MM interval assumes conventional oil.

That said, we are running Mobil 1 Advanced Fuel Economy 0w-20 or 0w30 up to 150% of the MM with no problems. (It comes out to 9K - 11K miles on an OCI.) The car is not garaged.

Our '07 Fit is up to 70K miles...and when we did a valve adjustment at 62K, the rockers were clean as a whistle.

In case you are wondering, we use either Honda OE filters or PureOne.

OH! By the way, welcome! Nice to see another Canadian on board.

With Honda or Toyota at $5L I'd have a hard time buying M1 at our prices. If you're not going to run the MM though I'd stick with conventional, don't know if you're a Costco member but their prices on Formula Shell and GTX are pretty much unbeatable here. Even up to the MM it should live a long life on conventional.

The Honda and Toyota 0W-20's are such superior oils to a 5w20 conventional that it's actually false economy to run anything else.
The fuel savings alone will more than negate the slight difference in price plus you're getting better lubrication.
It's a slam dunk!

I agree...and by watching for rebates in the Product Rebates, Sales, and Promotions area of BITOG, you can get your cost per mile (or KM) to less that what the more frequent Conventional oil changes would cost.

(PS, Caterham owners know their stuff)

Not necessarily so up here. Fram EG and the Fram built Motomaster at Canadian Tire are about the cheapest I can find. If price is your first concern they are hard to beat here.

Same in this case, almost twice the price of Honda or Toyota here.

Wow thanks for all the suggestions.

Fram filters are the cheapest up here and pretty much only what's available in wal-mart or Canadian tire, around 4 bucks.

Honda OEM are 8-10$

You will do absolutely fine with the Fram filters, though if given the choice I would go for the OEM Honda filter (I used to buy them in bulk to save).
