Getting ready to go on "vacation" and would like to do a oil change that will hopefully be good until i get back home.

Vehicle is a 2010 Nissan Pathfinder with the 4.0 V6. Currently has just over 1000 miles on it. Was planing on changing out the factory fill with whatever syn is on sale, then change it one last time around the first of the year.

So in summary looking for a high OCI oil and filter to last 6 months to a year and around 10k miles. Also a filter to pair it with.

Thanks,
Heath

Welcome to BITOG.

The only way you will know if you can go 10,000 miles safely is to do a couple of used oil analyses to gather trend data. Once you can determine how the oil holds up to longer oil change intervals, you can begin to extend them gradually.

Also, you may want to consider maintaining the factory oil change schedule to make sure you are not in violation of Nissan's warranty terms. Once you are out of warranty, you can do whatever you want.

I would not accept random advice from the internet regarding extended oil change intervals. No one can assure you that oil X and filter Y will protect for mileage Z. Do you own evaluations based on your vehicle, driving style, and personal needs. What works for someone else may not work for you.

In our previous SUV, an Xterra, same powertrain. I ran PP 5w-30 at 5k OCI and either a napa gold or M1 filter.

I liked the PP at those intervals but i dont think id be comfortable running it 10k+ on the same oil and filter.

First make sure you are meeting warranty requirements for OCI.

Pennz Plat, M1, Valvoline Synpower, I'd even say Quaker State HP/Ultimate Durabilty.

Filters, Pure One, M1, K&N. any higher line.

For more cost, any of the boutiques (Amsoil, Red Line, Royal Purple) for oil and/or filter.

Not too worried about the warranty OCI. It states every 3,750 miles.

My initial thoughts were Redline 5w-30 for it high moly and a amsoil ea-013 filter for the supposed 25k longevity.

Id love to do a UOA on the next fill after the factory fill thats in now, but i dont think it would be accurate and i really dont have the time to run the oil long enough to get a fair reading before i need to put the high OCI oil and filter in and on.

Amsoil would work well. Extended OCIs are a specialty of theirs.

Castrol Edge used to advertise REALLY long OCIs. Not sure what happened to that, but Edge is apparently a very new formulation and should be a good candidate.

Mobil 1 would probably work; if you want to go with that, pick the "Extended Protection" version.

Other than those, you might want to look for oils certified for BMW LL-01 or Mercedes-Benz 229.5. Those are very demanding long-drain specs.

Whatever oil you run, definitely use an Amsoil EaO filter if you can.

However, bretfraz's caveat deserves attention:

I'd probably just hit a dealer on the vacation somewhere.

im guessing 3750 is the severe schedule? vacation driving should be normal schedule I would think

"Vaction" as in ill be out of the country doing work for uncle sam. My wife would be grateful if she didnt have to worry about things like changing or having the oil changed. I try to leave her with as little to worry about as possible while im away.

And 3750 is across the board IIRC.

Amsoil if you want to be paranoid. Otherwise, Castrol EDGE or Mobil 1 Extended Performance.

Reason for these is that these oils advertise long intervals.

Amsoil SSO 0w-30 boasts 35k miles normal / 17.5k miles severe.
I believe the other grades are 25k / 15k for their 100% synthetics

EDGE and M1 EP state 15k miles on their bottle.

Hmm, I just read your last post.

If youre not concerned about the warantee, I'd go straight for the 0w30 amsoil SSO.

That would easily do the trick.

I checked the Nissan website.

3750mi is the SEVERE schedule.

7500mi is the normal schedule.

although their definition of severe service is much "wussier" than Fords and some of the other manufacturers

I'd probably go with something like castrol edge, or M1 for 7500miles. Although they would have to prove not changing the oil was at fault (if you had a problem)

other oils would work but I like something I can buy locally.

The VQ in Nissan cars/trucks are very hard on oils. Pushing to 10k miles on any oil is going to be hard period. If you use anything, get the best Amsoil oil you can get for your money. The other oils will most likely not be near as good past 6k as Amsoil will be.

i would not run that long on any oil if my truck only had 1000 miles on it. Do yourself a favor and dont push long intervals until it has 10 to 20 thousand miles on it. Wear is high in the beginning of an engines life.

Mobil 1, Castrol Syntec, Or PP will all do the job. Show your wife how to check and top off the oil incase there is consumption during the 10k miles. Have her in the habit of checking the oil every 102k miles and that should catch any issues. Good luck on your "Vacation"

on that engine? That is one of the worst engines as far as trying to extend oil life/change intervals.

regardless one extended interval on m1EP or amsoil shouldnt hurt anything.

May choice would be to do another short OCI with regular oil like Pennzoil or Valvoline then change to Amsoil ASL 5W30 and a EAO oil filter. You may want her or a neighbor to check the oil every month or so to be sure the level is good. If yow get a mid tour vacation from your vacation you could change the oil and filter then just to be on the safe side. I run all my cars at 10K/1 year OCI's with no troubles and have been for the past eight or nine years.
