Oil recommendation for '06 D. Ram Hemi (w/ MDS)

Just got my Ram about 3 weeks ago, and thought I'd get some input as to what oil to use. 5-6 days a week I do pretty short trips (generally of the one-mile variety), with the 6th or 7th day of the week being a 60mi. round-trip drive of mainly highway (70-80mph) to another city. I just picked up 14 quarts of Havoline dino for $1.69/quart at GI Joes (i'm assuming it's a closeout like A.A. is having, but I don't have an A.A. around me). The truck has a 7-quart sump, so this will get me through the full "break-in period".... but beyond that, I'm not sure what to run.

Given my short trips everyday, would it be beneficial for me to run a synthetic? I want to stay with an over-the-counter brew (so no Redline, RP, Torco, etc etc), but I do have access to pretty much any over-the-counter oil... Mobil 1 0w20, Pennzoil Platinum 5w20, Castrol Syntec 5w20 in a 5-quart jug (always beneficial), MotorCraft 5w20 in a 5-quart jug, and any brew of 5w20 conventional I could want.

Help me out guys... what do you all think? I am going to stay with 5w20 as per the manual's recommendation with the MDS system.

Under warranty the motorcraft will do the job very nicely. After warranty the mobil 1 0w-20 or 5w30 would be best depending on how far north or south you live. I am a great believer of the Mobil 1 0w40 for extra long engine life with extended changes. Might not be best if you live in Buffalo etc. but down south I love it.

From what I have read, all the 5w20's are a synthetic blend. The MC shows super low wear numbers in the used oil analysis I have seen. There are Ford modulars with over 200k on them with this same oil used the entire time. That is more than well enough for me...

I live in Southern Oregon where the temps are pretty reasonable year-round.

With that MDS engine I believe you're "requested" to use a
XW-20 in order for the MDS to act seamlessly. It sounds like you would fall in the severe service catagory. What's Dodge's warranty OCI requirement for severe service use? I'd guess it's 3,000mi/3mo. Might as well you a quality blend such as the MC during warranty. It would seem like a waste of good oil if you used a synthetic and had to change it every 3,000 miles anyway. As others have said you can go syntetic with longer OCI's after the warranty is up. Just curious, how many miles is the warranty good for?

3yr/36,000mi warranty. And yeah, their "severe service" interval is the typical 3mo/3,000mi

I would also use regular oil and change more often. Motorcraft and Havoline 5w-20s have a lot of molybdenum, which is a good antiwear additive.

Make sure you stick with 5w20 or else that MDS will go bye bye!

Does MC really much moly? The last VOA I saw of it had a moly count of 31 vs. the havoline's that was several hundred.

5W-20 pennzoil, chevron, havoline.
The pennzoil is what I have in mine at the moment. The first oil change I used chevron. Use it and be happy.
