Oil Recommendation - 64 Chevy 283

Mild SBC? a good 10W30 is adequate; if you experience noise or low OP you likely have wear or build issues.

We Had been to be able to Purchase Rotella Triple Protect mixed fleet, haven't seen it. I haven't tried the
T4 10w30 in the 67 Buick GS. It gets "whatever" 10w30"

In 1964 this is most likely what your 283 ran on.
That's not what Chevrolet recommended in '62, which was 10w30 at temperatures above 0°F, or straight 20 above 32°F. Service MS required, so no non-detergent junk allowed. Straight 30 only "for sustained high speed driving when the temperature is above 90° F." I doubt '64 was much different.

Yes but most folks wanted “straight 30”. That era of 283 had a known oil consumption issue and it was doubtful owners would use more expensive oil. Saw many TSBs from Chevrolet. Our service manager had them archived in notebooks in his office. Not doubting the owners manual recommended oil but there were issues…

What does the manual say?
API SC most likely Ran 10W30 in most everything up North in the 70s' unless you were Ricky Racer

This engine does not require anything special. A Ford Escort with the Old Hemi 4 banger would see same stresses and any SOHC inverted bucket 4 banger would be MORE susceptible to cam chewing.
That cam is worn in, factory seat pressure are low as is the "redline"

Now if built to 1hp per cube or more it may need something with more EP/AW

Yes, what is the build of this 283? I assume lo-po and not something with Power Pack heads, solid lifter cam and high compression.

If it is a low-po 283 any off the shelf 10w40 is fine. If it's got high valve spring pressure though, use something with a lot of ZDDP like Rotella or even Valvoline VR1.

Just got the truck and checked the oil. It certainly needs a change right away.

Would you go with Castrol GTX Classic or Shell Rotella T4 15w40? It runs ok but doesn't rev super well.

Any thoughts on using Seafoam or some other cleaner before changing the oil?
How does it look under a valve cover? How does the oil look?
The Rotella has strong detergents. If it needs some help, a fresh filter and a short 3K Rotella run couldn't hurt.

Ultimately I would run the Castrol, but that engine will live a long time on any decent 10wXX oil.
Have fun with it!

The oil is completely black. I haven't looked under the valve covers.

Sounds like I should go with Rotella for one or two changes then Castrol. This truck will be driven a few times a week but not a ton of miles. It's just a going ta town rig :)

The owners manual for that year truck probably spec'd 10w30 (possibly 10w-40 since it was very popular at the time). I would be using a 5w-40 grade oil with the A40 and/or ACEA A3 spec. Quaker State Full Synthetic Euro 5w-40 is smartly priced at WalMart (while it last's).

That's what I put in my old Chevy.
