If you're using 5w30, be sure it's synthetic.

I like the 10w30 HDEO synthetic blend oils like Delo XLE or Rotella T5. They are both around $4/qt. at WalMart.

Would definitely use multi-grade in an OHV engine.

Why exactly?

Because it will provide better start-up lubrication to the OHV components. A lot of manufacturers recommend this for their engines with overhead valves.

The valve lash clearance is like .003-.005, so fast oil delivery is important.

I've run straight brand name 30wt in my 23hp OHV Briggs for 12 seasons in Michigan. When I checked the valve lash this summer, it was .004" on both cylinders. It doesn't see any winter use, so that may have something to do with it.
