Hi guys,i have a 20hp single cylinder ohc briggs on my crftsman lt3000 tractor. It rynns great but is using oil. Ive been using 5w30 conventional changed every spring with filter. What oil would you recommend for this? Its used weekly to mow my lawn. Thank you for any help you may have to offer!

I use 10w30 syn or high mileage in my riding mower.

I use 15w40 in my push mower as it uses more oil and is a little older. But start with a good 10w30 first.

Rotella T6 5W-40 ought to be just the thing

The 5W will start easily. The 40 at op temp will slow the oil consumption. It's synthetic so it'll clean the old motor out slowly. It may free the rings so the oil consumption may slow noticeably

Hi Mrjlube,
Not meaning to be a grouch, may I suggest that you do a search on this topic? I know that I've replied to this exact question at least 5 times this summer. It is well proven that HDEO is an excellent oil for this application.

These engines must run kindof hot, if you are near a Farm and Fleet a Mystik 10w30 JT8 synthetic blend (CJ-4,CI-4PLUS,CI-4,CH-4/SM) is recommended. Alittle more money you can run a Shell Rotella 10w30.

Shella Rotella 10w30 Synblend is awesome oil and good price point. Though using what is Oem cant be bad either I suppose. You CAN always change it more often too. Some argue especially in cars that changing too much is bad,but its better than not enough. Seen way more cars break from lack of maintenance than too much.

i have used pennzoil strait 30 in every small engine i ever owned forever and they all run great including my Allis Charmers snow blower my Dad got in 1966 when i was a baby i still have it.. It has always been used to clean our homes where the plows can't fit.. Including sidewalks which were always very long. It smokes a little but runs very good the only thing i did was convert it to an electronic ignition because the points rotted away..lol

Same. Pennzoil 30wt in everything air cooled. Never had a problem.

You said your engine is a OHC engine, don't you mean OHV? Anyway I use Mobil 1 10w30 in my 21 HP Briggs and no oil loss in my 1.5 year OCI. My mower is the T3000 model as well. Another thing, These engines are prone to blow head gaskets. My did this year, and started using oil. Outside that it uses no oil at all.

Tig 1....i did mean ohv...thanks for catching that. I guess ill try the rotella 10w30 or some Pennzoil straight 30wt. I have to add about 1 qt over the coarse of the summer. March through october in Michigan. Has been well maintained,i am original owner. But only have used 5w30 conventional since day 1. Time to try diff. Oils. Really appreciate all your help!! Happy holidays!

I put in synthetic 10W30 every end of season.......
You can always find a good deal on any brand of that.
I am however gonna try Rotella 15W40 next mowing season.... just to see
